It's that time again. Time to wake up early, wait in line and see what Black Friday deals you can get.
Black Friday has been a yearly event, since the 1960s, but hasn't always meant what it means now. In the beginning, Black Friday was coined to describe the beginning of the Christmas shopping season. Once retailers noticed that they could entice customers to their stores with major sales, the shopping extravaganza began.
For anyone who's an avid viewer of the annual Charlie Brown Thanksgiving special, you might have an idea about how the first Thanksgiving celebration came about. Linus Van Pelt recalled the first Thanksgiving feast in 1621 with Indian chief Massasoit, Governor William Bradford and Captain Miles Standish. But, for the history buff, there was one Thanksgiving celebration that was held before.
The weather may be getting colder, but the moisture doesn't seem to be coming just yet. The area is still dry and the burn ban was left on at the regular Nolan County Commissioner's meeting on Monday, at least for the time being.
The topic of electricity was a hot one. Two presentations on possible ways to lower electricity costs were heard at the meeting; Bob Forman presented for Priority Power Management Company and Lee Washington also presented.
Wal-Mart has partnered with West Texas Children's Advocacy Center to provide a way for many children in the area to have a better Christmas. Angels on a Christmas tree at Wal-Mart represent children who have been served by the WTCAC this year. Each angel has a child's gender, ages, sizes and special needs or a favorite toy of character that the child would like.
East Ridge Elementary School collected overÂ 2,000 items for their Fill the Boot Food Drive in November. Mrs. Brennanâ€™s first grade class collected 435 items. They earned a popcorn party. East Ridge would like to thank all of the parents, students and staff for all their help.
Joy Witt, Born Oct. 10, 1941, in Sweetwater, passed away Nov. 17, 2010, in Lubbock after a long battle with cancer. Joy was a life-long student; she graduated from Sweetwater High School and Trinity University in San Antonio. While living in Santa Fe, NM, Joy attended Santa Fe Community College, she took classes in sculpture at Loveland Academy of Fine Arts and Scottsdale Artists School. While Joy was married to Canadian sculptor, Peter Rice-Jones, she lived with the Cree Indians near Edmonton, Alberta.
Nella Frances Van Leer, 89, of Colorado City, died Monday, Nov. 22, 2010, at Mitchell County Hospital.
Her body was cremated. No further services are planned at this time.
A memorial service for Marvin Doyle Bailey, 68, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 26, 2010, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Steve Davis officiating. He was cremated. Arrangements are under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Bailey died Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010, at University Hospital in Lubbock.
He was born Dec. 17, 1941, in Quanah, Texas. He had worked for Jolley Well Service as a pulling unit operator and had also worked for Basic Energy. Bailey was a Baptist and had lived in Sweetwater most of his life.
ABILENE â€” After going scoreless up to that point, Sweetwaterâ€™s Candice Hernandez was fouled and made both free throws with less than a second to play, giving the Lady Mustangs to a dramatic 43-42 win over Class 5A Abilene Cooper on Tuesday night.
Kinsey Browning scored 15 points and Alicia Finn added 12 points and a team-high 10 rebounds for Sweet-water (2-4), which ended a four-game losing streak with the victory.
Browning finished with four 3-pointers in the game. Her last trey got Sweet-water within 42-41 and set the stage for Hernandezâ€™s game-winning free throws.
Sweetwater High School will hold its football banquet to honor the 2010 Mustangs on Monday, Dec. 6 at 6:30 p.m. at The Center at Texas State Technical College.
Tickets will be sold at the SHS fieldhouse until Thursday, Dec. 2 at noon and are $15 each.
All of the varsity, JV and freshman football players, cheerleaders and student trainers will be introduced.
In addition, a highlight video of the 2010 season will be shown.
