PANTHER CREEK â€” Blackwell lost to Panther Creek, 48-30, in its final game of the season Friday. No other information on the game was available at press time.
It was the first District 8, Division II six-man win for Panther Creek (3-7 overall). Blackwell ends 0-3 in district and 4-6 for the season.
HERMLEIGH â€” A Highland team that hasnâ€™t had much go its way this season started Fridayâ€™s final game against Hermleigh on a positive note. Thomas Stewart scored on runs of 7 and 42 yards to give the Hornets an early 14-0 lead, and Highland still led the Cardinals by seven, 20-13, after a 6-yard run by Peyton Howard in the second period.
But Hermleigh â€” despite allowing Stewart to run for 195 yards in the final game of an outstanding high school career â€” eventually went ahead by six, 26-20, at halftime, and by 13, 39-26, after three periods.
ROSCOE â€” For years, the Roscoe Plowboys have been blowing out district opponents and making the playoffs. And Fridayâ€™s 53-7 win over Rotan at Plowboy Field made it 13 straight trips to the postseason for one of the stateâ€™s most successful Class 1A programs.
The Smith boys â€” Caden and Collin â€” had a hand in seven of the eight touch-downs as Roscoe (3-2, 4-6)clinched the third and final playoff spot in District 7-A. Rotan dropped to 0-5, 1-9.
The 32nd Judicial District Court accepted four guilty pleas this past week.
Jeremiah Anthony plead guilty to theft over $500 and the lesser included offense of theft over $1500; a class a misdemeanor. The offense occurred on Oct. 15, 2006. For a plea of guilty, Anthony received a year confinement in the Nolan County Jail, which was probated for two years. He is also responsible for a $500 fine, $309 in court costs, $500 attorney fees and $1,241.95 of restitution to David Etchison. He is also required to complete 120 hours of community service.
A graveside service for Inez Bartlett Wafer, 94, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, at Sweetwater Cemetery with Pastor Curtis Ward officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Wafer died Friday, Nov. 5, 2010, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater.
She was born Feb. 8, 1916, in Sweetwater. She married Otis Wafer on July 4, 1936, in Big Spring. She was a member of First Christian Church and had lived in Sweetwater and Nolan County all her life. She was the office manager for Wafer Motor Sales for many years.
Alberta Ross, a resident of Sweetwater for over 80 years, departed this life on Wednesday, Nov. 3, 2010, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.
She was born on July 10, 1922, to Jeannie Roberson and Clifford Williams in Overton, Texas. She moved with her mother to Sweetwater at the age of three and was a graduate of Booker T. Washington School. She married Wilford Ross in 1942 in Sweetwater, Texas. Born to the union was one son, Robert Leslie Ross.
Lorene Mulanax, age 85, of Sweetwater, passed away on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at her residence.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 8, 2010, at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Chris Stephens officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Lorene was born on May 3, 1925, in Ballinger, Texas. She worked for Holiday Inn Restaurant as a waitress and floor supervisor for many years before retiring. She married Harley Sheridan Mulanax on May 14, 1949, in Sweetwater.
O. B. Freeman was born in Sweetwater, Texas, to Otto and Clara Freeman on Aug. 15, 1924. He graduated from Sweetwater High School in 1943 and joined the United States Marines on June 17, 1943. He joined the Marines as a Private and was discharged in 1945 as a Corporal. O.B. participated in operations against enemy forces during World War II in the Marshall Islands: Saipan and Tinian in the B Company, 23rd Regiment, 4th Divison. He was awarded various honors including the Silver Star and Purple Heart.
Funeral services for Mary Frances Davis, 83, of Sweetwater, will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 7, 2010, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. James Baker officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 6, 2010, at McCoy Funeral Home.
Davis died Friday, Nov. 5, 2010, at Nolan Nursing and Rehab in Sweetwater.
ARLINGTON -- Eloise A. Azios, 92, passed away Friday, Nov. 5, 2010.
Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 8, 2010, at St. Matthew Catholic Church, 2021 New York Ave. Interment will follow at Parkdale Cemetery under the direction of Arlington Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 4-9 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, in Arlington Funeral Home Chapel with a rosary at 7 p.m.
Eloise was born April 14, 1918, in San Angelo to Rafaela and Miguel Armendariz. She was raised in Sweetwater as were her children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Joe Azios.
