Highland teams get split; Plowgirls lose

The Highland girls picked up their first win of the 2010-11 season on Friday, but the Highland boys and Roscoe girls both lost.
Highland’s girls (1-3) rallied in the second half for a 45-41 win over Sands. However, Highland’s boys lost 63-2 and Roscoe’s girls fell to Cross Plains 29-28.
After losing their last two games by a combined two points, Highland’s girls had to overcome a 23-18 halftime deficit to beat Sands.
The Lady Hornets pulled ahead by a point, 29-28, at the end of three periods and then outscored Sands 16-13 in the fourth quarter.

Henrietta arrives at J.P. Cowen

Henrietta the Thanksgiving Turkey made her annual appearance last week at J.P. Cowen Early Childhood Center. Although this is her first time at J. P. Cowen, this is her 17th arrival in Sweetwater with her first appearance being at Philip Nolan in 1993. Pictured with the famous turkey is Sweetwater ISD Maintenance and Transportation Director Scott Lambert, Vera Ellen McCombs and Billie Joe McCombs.

Southeast students place at UIL competition

Southeast Elementary UIL participants placed in several events at the UIL competition in Snyder. Elizabeth  Fernandez, Ariel Martinez and Josh Reeves placed third as a team in third grade Music Memory. Bob Turner placed sixth in third grade Story Telling and Racheal Sparks placed sixth in second grade Story Telling.

Oscar Lowell Taylor, Jr., age 84, of Sweetwater, passed away Friday, Nov. 19, 2010, at V.A. Medical Center in Big Spring, Texas.
His body was cremated. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 27, 2010, at Sweetwater Cemetery with Rev. James Baker officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Students at J.P. Cowen Early Childhood Center enjoyed a Thanksgiving feast with family and friends on Friday at the school.

SFD receives donations

Invenergy held a fundraising golf tournament on Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at the Lake Sweetwater Golf Course. The funds raised — totaling over $10,000 — will benefit the Sweetwater Fire Department to purchase wind turbine rescue equipment that will serve all wind farms in Nolan County. Invenergy did this last year to benefit the Snyder Fire Department.

Local Pee Wee team wins Superbowl

The undefeated Pee Wee Mustangs played at the Pee Wee Superbowl at 5 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010, at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene. They played against the Abilene Cowboys and won 46-24.

Girl Scouts celebrate Juliette Gordon Low

Juliette Gordon Low, the founder of Girl Scouts was born on Oct. 31, 1860. Juliette, nicknamed Daisy, started the organization called “American Girl Guides” in Savannah, Georgia on March 12, 1912, when she invited 18 girls to become a part of a movement that would develop their self-reliance and resourcefulness. Now known as the Girl Scouts of USA over 2 million girls are now registered scouts. Girls all over the world celebrated her 150th birthday on Sunday, Oct. 31, with different activities.
