November 17th
Talk about working overtime.
For some reason, that’s what the Sweetwater boys basketball team has to do when it faces Hawley.
After having to go overtime to beat the Bearcats in both meetings this past season, the Mustangs once again required an extra period to beat Hawley, 71-62, here Tuesday in their 2010-11 season opener.
The Roscoe girls cross country team finished in 11th place at this past weekend at the state meet held in Round Rock. The Plowgirls qualified for state with a third-place finish the previous week at the regional meet in Arlington. Pictured from left are alternate Alura Renteria, Katie McIntire, Kim Norris, Crystal Luna, Justina Brasuell, Mirian Solis, Jacinda Morales and Amber Craig. The Plowgirls were coached by Kelli Joe Sexton and Jessie Smith. Individually, Morales had the highest finish as she placed 29th.
November 16th
A suspicious fire was reported at 2:13 a.m., on Monday, Nov. 15 at 3901 FM-1230. The fire occurred at a ranch house, located southwest of Roscoe. The Roscoe Volunteer Fire Department was the first on the scene and enlisted the assistance of the Sweetwater Fire Department and Loraine Volunteer Fire Department. The call was reported by an oil field delivery driver, that was making her way to a large drilling rig location several miles up the road.
The brick, ranch house, which is located almost eight miles south of I-20, belonging to Mr. John H. Henley Jr., was declared a total loss.
The second grade classes at East Ridge Elementary had surprise visitors during P.E.  Several firemen came and played Capture the Flag, one of the students’ favorite games. The surprise visit was part of fire safety week. Students not only were able to enjoy fun and games with the fire department members, but they learned about fire safety, how to check fire detectors and other fire safety tips. Students and teachers of East Ridge extend their sincere thanks to members of the Sweetwater Fire Department.
Eurita Fay “Rita” Rieger, 76, of Maryneal, Texas passed away on Nov. 15, 2010 at her home. She was born January 16,1934 in Palestine, Texas. She married Wayne Rieger on July 6, 1952 in Palestine, Texas.
Survivors include her son, Paul Rieger and wife Debbie of Big Spring, Texas; daughters, Ada Jackson of Colorado Springs, Colorado and Paulia Sacket and husband Rick of Temple, Texas; one sister, Anita Wylie of Palestine, Texas; ten grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.
The high school basketball season will be arriving in full force here today, as the Sweetwater boys open their season against Hawley at 8 p.m. and the Sweetwater girls entertain Breckenridge at 6:30 at Mustang Gym.
Also on tap today will be freshman and JV girls con-tests at 5 p.m. in both gyms and a JV boys game at 6:30 at the old high school gym.

BIG SPRING – Big Spring State Hospital patients need outfits to keep themselves warm during the cool fall weather and the approaching winter season.
Jackets, coats, jeans and men’s shoes are the biggest need right now, said Melissa Adams, Big Spring State Hospital Program Coordinator.Â
Big Spring State Hospital patients often arrive at the hospital with one set of clothing. The hospital depends on the community for donations of gently worn clothing for the patients, Adams said.
Funeral services for Sarah Frances Jones, 80, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Jerry Payne and Rev. Don Casper officiating. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 17, 2010, at Taylor Cemetery near Lampasas. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 15, 2010, at McCoy Funeral Home.
Jones died Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
