Nolan County firefighters extinguished a large grass fire that burned close to 800 acres near the Highland school on Sunday afternoon.
Firefighters say they began battling the flames around noon Sunday, and had the blaze contained by about 3:30 p.m. The fire began at a travel trailer close to FM 608. A total of eight agencies responded to the fire with a total of 15 trucks and 35 people assisting with the blaze, according to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden.
380 toys were donated and $474.17 was raised at the Sweetwater Goodfellows annual toy drive on Saturday held at Wal-Mart. Shown are Norma DeLaO and Roger DeLaCruz donating toys at the drive. Those donating received free hot dogs and hot chocolate. There are still opportunities to donate to the Sweetwater Goodfellows, as they are still taking donations of new, unwrapped toys, non-perishable food items and monetary donations. Distribution will take place from 9-11 a.m. on Friday, Dec. 10, at Lamar Street Baptist Church. The annual Christmas party will follow from 3:45-4:45 p.m. on that day.
