Members of the Nolan County Foundation Board recently announced the awarding of $1,000 to Back Pack Buddies. In making the announcement and presenting agency representatives Leah and Alaina Andrews this assistance, Jerry Riggs, President of the NCF, stressed the importance of supporting worthwhile agencies as they serve vital needs for Nolan County residents. Riggs also stated that the NCF will be identifying other special needs and giving additional financial assistance in the near future.
Kenneth R. Smith, age 76, of Sweetwater, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 30, 2010 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home with Lester Cavitt officiating. Burial will follow at Roby Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Michael P. Rasor was born on April 10, 1958, in Sweetwater, TX. Heaven received this angel on Friday, Nov. 26, 2010, from his Irving home with soul mate, mother, brothers, family and friends. He is preceded in death by father, Clealen Rasor and surviving mother, Jessie Rasor of Lake Hawkins, TX.
He is survived by soul mate Linda Sue Geer-Rasor, born in Sweetwater, TX and living in Irving, TX;Â brothers, David Brooks of Bastrop, TX and Kenneth Rasor and wife Jo Ann Rasor of Dallas, TX; step daughters, Sammi Murdock and Debra Golightly and husband Steve Golightly of Irving, TX.
ROBY- Lee Roy Goolsby, 77, died Sunday, Nov. 28, 2010, at a Lubbock hospital.Â Services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 3, 2010, at the First Baptist Church of Roby with Bro. Jerry Vincent officiating.Â Burial will follow in Roby Cemetery under the direction of Weathersbee-Ray Funeral Home.Â Visitation will be Thursday from 5-6 p.m. at the funeral home.
After a 1-4 start this season, the Sweetwater High School girls basketball team won its second straight game here Tuesday by beating Clyde, 55-52.
Sweetwater (3-4), whose last three games were against Class 5A competition, was in a back-and-forth contest against Clyde until taking a 10-point lead (46-36) after three periods.
WALL â€” A year ago, the Sweetwater High School boys basketball team started out 3-0 only to suffer its first loss to a state-ranked Wall team.
It happened again Tues-day as the Mustangs suffered a 73-32 road loss to the Hawks, currently ranked No. 4 in Class 2A. Wall led 22-12, 41-22 and 69-27 at the breaks.
The high school basketball tournament season begins Thursday for several Nolan County teams, and two of them â€” the Blackwell boys and girls â€” will be hosting their annual Oak Creek Classic. Highland, which goes to Bronteâ€™s tourney this week, hosts its annual tournament next week.

Sweetwater High School will hold a football banquet to honor the 2010 Mustangs on Monday, Dec. 6 at 6:30 p.m. at The Center at Texas State Technical College.
Tickets will be sold at the SHS fieldhouse until Friday, Dec. 2 at noon and are $15 each. All varsity, JV and freshman football players, cheerleaders and student trainers will be introduced and a highlight video of the 2010 season will be shown.
