Texas Governor Rick Perry has issued a proclamation certifying that 244 counties in Texas are currently threatened by an extreme fire hazard due to a disaster in several counties in Texas.
"I do hereby certify that 244 counties in Texas are
currently threatened by extreme fire hazard. Lack of precipitation has dried grass and other vegetation across the state, posing significant fire danger which is expected to continue," stated Governor Rick Perry.
Audrey L. McMillan will be buried next to her husband, Vernon McMillan, on Monday, Dec. 27, 2010, at 2 p.m. in the Sweetwater Cemetery with a graveside service. She died at the age of 93 on Aug. 13, 2010, in the Valley View Nursing Home in Junction City, Kansas, after having been in the care of her daughter Charm Norris and husband Gary.
You know it's almost Christmas in Sweetwater when Coach David Mayes has his lights up counting down the days to the 25th of December.
But how did the yearly tradition begin? Sweetwater resident Kandy Myers was curious — just as most of us are — and took her investigation directly to the Mayes to find out how the countdown started.

Santa traveled a long distance in his scooter to visit the residents at Sweetwater Healthcare Center. Friends, family, staff and residents celebrated the season earlier this week and opened gifts with Santa.

With a top-notch headliner, great sponsors and wonderful donors, this year’s 41st annual West Texas Rehabilitation Center’s telethon promises to be the best yet. At seven o’clock on Saturday, Jan. 22, the popular country group Diamond Rio will step into the spotlight at REHAB 2011. Suddenlink Communications and gridSMART/AEP Texas are the official sponsors and, as they have for many years, Area-Wide Phone Books is also helping underwrite the show as a contributing sponsor. The Host Hotel for the Telethon is the MCM Elegante Suites.
First Financial Bank had their open house from 9 a.m. to noon on Tuesday, Dec. 21. Those who attended the event enjoyed traditional gingerbread, wassail and Christmas music.

Linda Martin Fry, 66, of Dallas and formerly of Sweetwater, died Thursday, Dec. 23, 2010, at a Dallas hospital.
She will be cremated. There will be a private family graveside service at a later date.
Fry was born Oct. 17, 1944, in Brady, Tx. She was a member of Broadway Baptist Church. Fry was a 1963 graduate of Sweetwater High School and attended Western Texas College in Snyder. She was a lifelong resident of Sweetwater and had lived in Abilene and Amarillo at different times and worked as a bookkeeper for A.I.G.
Jack Poe of Sweetwater recently recorded a hole in one while playing at Sweetwater Country Club. Poe made his ace on the No. 17 hole using an 8-iron. His feat was witnessed by Randy May, Wayne Chowning and Bobby Baucum.
