East Ridge Elementary and Sweetwater ISD show their support for a worthwhile local program that helps provide food and toys to needy families during the holiday season in Nolan County. Sweetwater Goodfellows food and toy drop boxes have been placed at schools and various businesses around Sweetwater. Starting Monday, Nov. 15, East Ridge Elementary will be sending out a challenge to it's students to bring in 100 or more food or toys items to be placed in the Goodfellows drop box. For every 100 items the students and faculty bring in a special treat will be provided.
Community support for the proposed Tenaska Trailblazer Energy Center is debatable. While 47% of Sweetwater residents are in favor of the proposed plant being built, 36% oppose its construction, and 17% are unsure whether the plant should be built.
Although a little less than half (47%) of Sweetwater residents support the construction of the plant, fewer than one in three (28%) support selling local water to Tenaska.
On Dec. 4 and 5, the Sweetwater Elks Lodge #1257 will be hosting their 37th Annual Christmas Craft Show at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex. The craft show will be open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 4, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 5. Admission is free and door prize drawings will be held every 30 minutes. Sweetwater Masonic Lodge 571 will host their annual Thanksgiving dinner Saturday, Nov. 13, at 6:30 p.m.
The meeting has been called the present the Golden Trowel award to Brother Herman (Lindy) Lindeman and the Community Builder award to Mr. Tom Henderson.
Highland Heights United Methodist Church here in Sweetwater will host a community-wide event — the Second Annual Sweetwater's Got Talent Gospel Brunch.
The theme is a "gospel brunch" and all are invited to attend. It will be held on from 9 a.m. to noon on Sunday, Nov. 21, 2010, in the fellowship hall of the church, located at 1801 Lamar Street. There will be no preaching nor a church service, just a good time to enjoy a good meal and share talents and a good time.
Texas AgriLife Extension Service is proud to announce that the 2010 Abilene Area Pecan Show will be held Nov. 17, 2010. Residents of Callahan, Jones, Shackelford, Nolan, Fisher and Taylor Counties are invited to submit their pecans for competition and judging.
To enter the 2010 Abilene Area Pecan Show, submit 42 nuts of each pecan variety in a resealable, plastic bag to the Taylor County Extension Office. Entries began being accepted Monday, Nov. 8 ; however, all entries are due to the Taylor County Extension Office by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, Nov. 16 .
Even with the cold weather, their hasn't been enough precipitation in Nolan County to avoid a burn ban.
A burn ban was put in place for Nolan County on Wednesday, Nov. 10 during a special meeting of the Nolan County Commissioners. Other surrounding counties have installed a burn ban as well.
Also at the meeting, votes from the recent election were also canvased. All the votes were accepted by the commissioners.

TUSCOLA — Roscoe knew it couldn’t afford to turn it over against Munday in its Class 1A bi-district playoff against the Moguls and have a chance to win.
Unfortunately, that’s just what happened as the Plowboys coughed it up five times, four times in the first half. That helped Munday race to a 42-8 lead at intermission and cruise from there to a 49-14 victory.
The Moguls also racked up 404 yards, the vast ma-jority of it coming in the first half, while limiting Roscoe to 172.
Students pay attention and learn more than most might think.
Brandi Gee, a Sweetwater High School algebra teacher, witnessed just how much of an impact she had made on one of her students.
Gee was chosen as a recipient of the Teacher Tribute, after being nominated by Marisa Morgan. Teacher Tribute is a program that has been celebrating great students and great teachers, for the past ten years. During that ten years, a little over two hundred teachers have been recognized.
“I was very surprised,” Gee said. “I like to make algebra fun for my students.”
Sweetwater Christian School students, staff and board members took part in a dedication ceremony, on Monday morning.
Recently, SCS was able to move into their new building, which was made possible through the donations of Mr. Cyrus Dale McCreight.
McCreight made the donation and gave the glory to God and in recognition of his mother, who opened the first private pre-school in Sweetwater. A plaque, dedicated to Mr. Dale, will hang in the entrance of the new SCS school.
