Roscoe, Blackwell girls lose in season openers

Roscoe and Blackwell lost season-opening girls basketball games this past Tuesday. The Plowgirls fell to Winters 72-42 in their opener, while the Lady Hornets were defeated by TLC Academy 26-18.
For Roscoe, Kimberly Norris had 17 points while Jacinda Morales contributed six points, Natalie Anthony and Kaitlinn Reed five, Carolina Perez three and Faith Boren, Katie McIntire and Lynnsi Moses two. Winters also won the JV game 27-26 as Eva Aguayo scored nine, Mirian Solis eight, Tiffany Seider four, Alexandria Cuellar and Alura Renteria two and Justina Brasuell one.

Sweetwater remembers all of its veterans

The Sweetwater VFW Post 2479 held its annual Veteran’s Day Flag Raising ceremony at the local VFW post this morning. Several citizens were present to watch the flag being raised and enjoy coffee and donuts. Judge Tim Fambrough, who served as guest speaker, talked about the transition made from freedom fighter to American veteran. He urged those in attendance to assist veterans through charities, service and other efforts. Fambrough also offered various statistics about veterans, including the fact that there are over 23 million American veterans today, even those currently serving.

Hoyt House honored veterans with a pancake breakfast and presentation by guest speaker, Nolan County Veterans Service Officer Robert McBride. McBride spoke about how Veterans Day is becoming undercelebrated. We are currently in the longest running war, The War on Terror, and we have the fastest sinking veteran population. He reminded the audience, for veterans, everyday is Veterans Day. Pictured above, in no particular order, are veterans: Lewis Davis, T.A. The Roscoe American Legion Post #227 honored veterans with a full breakfast. Local recruiter, Raymond Medellin was the guest speaker. According to Donnie Willman, the breakfast is important to bring all veterans together. “Their service is the reason that we have our freedom,” Willman said. Bill Talbert continued to say, being a prisoner of war is tough, but there is nothing worse than a country that doesn’t have the pride or the freedom to remember their veterans.

Lions Club Honors Veterans

The Lion’s Club recognized its veterans, during their weekly meeting. Their program included a recap of Lion Michelle Steakley when she went to see her son graduate from Navy boot camp.

William Don Witherspoon went to be with the Lord on Wednesday November 10, 2010. He is preceeded in death by Dorris Virginia Witherspoon. He was 80 years old.
Survivors include his brother, Gene Witherspoon and wife Patricia of Bella Vista, AR, son Doak and wife Lydia of Frisco, TX, Dane of Cleburne, Tracy Schaeffer from Denver, CO., son Tracy and wife Angela from Lubbock, TX, daughter D’Ann Harris and husband Britt from Loveland, CO., seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren and twin boys on the way.

Frances R. Smith, 85, of Sweetwater, passed away, on Tuesday November 9, 2010 at Stonecrest Assisted Living. She was born on April 5, 1925 in Rayville, Lousiana. She married J H Smith on March 25, 1948, in Houston, Texas.
Survivors include her daughter, Kathy Walker and husband David of Sweetwater; her sister, Alma Wooderson of Alvin; her grandaughter, Ashley Walker of Sweetwater and two grandsons, Brad Walker of Austin and Michael Smith of Houston.

Roscoe gets a rematch with Moguls in playoffs

Although this has been a year of transition, one thing hasn’t changed at Roscoe — the Plowboys are once again in the playoffs.
However, first-year coach Jonathan Haseloff’s team is looking for a big change on the gridiron today when they face Munday’s Moguls in bi-district at 7:30 p.m. at Jim Ned High School.
Roscoe lost a 31-0 deci-sion to Munday in a non-district game in September, but the contest was closer than the final score might indicate.
