TNB donates to Sweetwater Goodfellows

This year Texas National Bank purchased Sweetwater Mustang stadium seats and distributed them free of charge to Mustang fans making a minimum $20 per seat donation to the Goodfellows of Sweetwater. Speaking about the fundraiser Texas National Bank President Bill Johnson said, "I think our staff came up with a great idea this year. The Goodfellows program is such an important service for the kids of our community, and this fundraiser attracted the interest and participation of a wide group of our citizens." Chris Casto and Trey Atkin presented donation from the fundraiser totaling $1,275.00 to

GP awards SFD with grant

Every day, millions of people count on volunteer and rural community fire units to protect them and their property. More than 825,000 volunteer and small town firefighters do their jobs mostly without recognition and often without the latest equipment or training.
The Sweetwater Fire Department has won a 2010 Georgia-Pacific Bucket Brigadeâ„¢ grant. Chosen from more than 120 applicants in Georgia-Pacific facility communities in 23 states, the unit received $5,000 to purchase new equipment and gear.

Opposition continues against Tenaska

(Sweetwater and Austin) – The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) recently voted to issue an air permit for the proposed Tenaska Trailblazer Coal plant in Sweetwater, Texas. This is the third coal plant permitted in 2010 and the eleventh coal plant recently permitted in Texas that has yet to go online.

A Stockyards Christmas

Luke thought he was just ordinary. He did his daily work without notice, kept himself out of trouble and did what he was told. That was why he was totally shocked when he was told he was selected for the yearly journey. Not just an ordinary journey but the Christmas Eve trek to the Stockyards. The Stockyards, to the uninitiated, was the magical place in Fort Worth where, for many years, all the animals gathered.

Minami visits local library

Terry Minami from Abilene taught a group of children and adults how to make holiday origami ornaments at the County-City Library. Be sure to go by and see the beautiful origami ornaments they made to decorate the library's Christmas tree.

Alton Keith Mulanax

Alton Keith Mulanax, age 59, of Sweetwater, passed away Thursday, Dec. 16, 2010, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 19, 2010, at Sweetwater Cemetery with Rev. Chris Stephens officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Keith was born Aug. 18, 1951, in Snyder, Texas. He was a Baptist.

SW teams back in action

The Sweetwater boys and girls varsity basketball teams will have tough games against Class 2A opponents when they return to non-district action today at separate locations.
The boys (5-6) will go to Bangs, currently ranked 16th in Class 2A, for their game that is scheduled to tip off at 7:30 p.m. The Mustangs ended a five-game losing streak with a 36-33 win over Breckenridge here on Tuesday.
Meanwhile, the Sweet-water girls (10-8) will host Ballinger at 6:30 p.m. after Tuesday’s 64-46 win over Lamesa that was the Lady Mustangs’ fourth straight this season.

SISD’s United Way Campaign comes to an end

Sweetwater ISD recently completed their 2010-2011 United Way Campaign for the local Nolan County Chapter. Through the generosity and support of the SISD team members, Sweetwater ISD donated $10,000 to the local agencies supported by the Nolan County United Way. The top contributing campus was Sweetwater Intermediate School and the biggest increases from last year were Sweetwater High School and J.P. Cowen Early Childhood Center.
