The Sweetwater Kiwanis Club held the 20th annual Star Search competition on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011. Many local students showcased their talents at the event. Shown are the Star Search winners of the middle school division, Karleigh Coldiron won second place for singing "If I Die Young;" Abby McPherson won second place for singing "My Heart Will Go On;" and Lizzie Gray, Mikeilah Foust, Kristen Brown, Hanna Hayes, Katie Fox and Alaina Andrews won first place for singing and signing to "Signs of Hope."

The Sweetwater Kiwanis Club held the 20th annual Star Search competition on Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011. Many local students showcased their talents at the event. Shown are the winners of the elementary division, Madison Sosa, Kyla Daniel, Mia Valdez and Isabel Ortega won first place with their hand jive dance to a Grease song; Kyrsten Smith won second place singing "Wind Beneath My Wings," accompanied by her grandfather Skeet Smith on acoustic guitar; and Collin Stafford won third place with his "Techno Collin" light show.

RPMH hosts free diabetic support group

Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital is offering a free diabetic support group meeting on Feb. 1, 2011 at the hospital’s Emergency Department Classroom (200 E. Arizona Ave.). Beginning at 2 p.m., the hour-long program will focus on appropriate exercise routines for individuals with diabetes.
“Proper and adequate exercise is just one of the critical components in managing diabetes,” said Rosa Best, chief nursing officer at Rolling Plains Memorial. “In addition to supporting your body’s efficient use of insulin, exercise also contributes to your overall health.”

Jessie Jack (Horne) Payne, age 94, of San Antonio, passed away Sunday, Jan. 23, 2011, at Vitas Morningside Manor in San Antonio, Texas.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011 at Sweetwater Cemetery with Rev. Phillip Thomas officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Lillian Darrellyn "Lillie" Burwick

Funeral services for Lillian Darrellyn "Lillie" Burwick, five months old, of Blackwell, will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, Jan. 2, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Daniel Dotson officiating. Interment will follow at Blackwell Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Burwick died Saturday, Jan. 22, 2011, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
She was born Aug. 21, 2010, in Abilene.

Area basketball teams fall short in Friday action

January 24, 2011

Nolan County area basketball teams found the going tough on Friday.
The Roscoe boys and girls lost at Stamford by scores of 86-36 and 42-28, respectively.
Highland’s teams hosted Roby but they experienced a similar fate, as Roby won the boys game 61-25 and slipped by the girls 30-28.
Blackwell’s teams hosted Bronte and the boys lost 57-24, while the girls fell 58-28.

Kelley goes for two

Sweetwater’s Paxton Kelley goes up over two Brownwood defenders in Friday’s district game at Mustang Gym. The Lions won the game 72-45. Sweetwater goes to Snyder on Tuesday.

Smith named to Super Team

Caden Smith of Roscoe was named on Sunday by the Abilene Reporter-News to its All-Big Country Football Super Team as a defensive lineman.
Smith, a 6-3, 240-pound senior, recorded 109 tackles this season and received honorable mention all-state honors. He also received honorable mention as a quarterback on the All-Big Country Class 1A team.
