Bellamy Brothers to perform free concert

The Fifth Annual West Texas Wind Festival is expected to be another event in which families from the surrounding areas can gather for many activities on the streets of Roscoe. The free event will feature headline act The Bellamy Brothers. Local band Lawless Flatz will also perform during the event. Other attractions this year include the Plowboy Mud Bog at George Parks Field, food and craft vendors downtown, The Roscoe Volunteer Fire Department barbecue cook-off and a fireworks show. The event will take place from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday. Oct.

One in eight women have a chance at developing invasive breast cancer some time during her life. For Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH), that statistic is one too many. This October, the local hospital is launching an initiative that will increase awareness and raise funds for breast cancer research on behalf of the American Cancer Society.

SEED welcomes new board member

The newest board member of SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) was introduced during the group's meeting on Monday morning, Oct. 10, 2011 at the Chamber of Commerce.
David Welch was appointed in September by the City Commission to begin his three-year term which starting on Oct. 1. Mr. Welch is occupying the seat vacated by previous SEED board member John Jay, who recently completed his time of service on the board.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 37 calls for service, issued seven citations and made two arrests on Oct. 10, 2011.

The SPD received 24, 911 calls.

• Josh Carney, 20 — Warrant.
• Crystal Guzman, 26 — Warrants.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had nine calls for service, served two civil papers and made three arrests on Oct. 10, 2011.

• Mario Angel Perez, 28, of Abilene — Warrant/violation of parole.

James William Mardis

James William Mardis, 72, passed away at his residence on Wednesday, Oct. 12, 2011. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories, with the Reverends Jerry Payne and Keith Clifton officiating. Interment will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery in Sweetwater. The family will receive friends on Friday, from 6-8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home, 401 E. 3rd Street in Sweetwater.
James was born Oct. 29, 1938, in Fisher County, Texas, to James and Effie Lucille Mardis. On Aug. 27, 1956, he married Barbara E. Thompson in Busby, Texas.

Football player of the week

Taylor Jones has been chosen Football Player of the Week for Sweetwater. Jones, a third-year senior starter at quarterback, completed 15 of 22 passes for 149 yards and one touchdown, and was also the Mustangs’ top rusher with 87 yards on 25 carries against Wylie this past Friday in Sweetwater’s district opener. He has accounted for over 1,200 yards passing and running this season. In addition, Jones played at free safety against Wylie and assisted on two tackles.

SHS tennis team brings home many medals at Andrews’ two-day fall tourney

Sweetwater High School’s varsity tennis team brought home a number of medals from Andrews’ fall tourna-ment held this past Friday and Saturday.
In boys singles, Chris Hernandez placed third in Flight One while Stephen Shipp took second-place honors in Flight 3 and Michael Redondo was third in Flight 4.
In boys doubles, Chris Hernandez and Isaiah Her-nandez brought home the overall first-place medal, while Shipp and Redondo took third-place honors in Flight 2 boys doubles at the two-day tournament.
