MIDLAND â€” Midland Christian, like Sweetwater, plays 11-man football. However, running back Christian Whigham was a one-man wrecking crew for the host team Friday in a 48-21 win over Sweetwater.
Whigham finished with 214 yards on 19 carries and scored a school-record seven touchdowns, five of them in the first half, to help Midland Christian take a 48-0 lead before Sweet-water (3-3) came up with three touchdowns in the fourth quarter to make the final score a bit closer.
BROWNWOOD â€” The Sweetwater volleyball team came close to getting its first district win Friday, but instead lost to Brownwood in four games by scores of 24-26, 25-23, 22-25 and 15-25. Sweetwater fell to 0-2 in district and 16-16 overall, while Brownwood is 2-1 and 10-13 and just one-half game out of the district lead. More infor-mation on Fridayâ€™s match will appear in a later story.
The two six-man football teams from Nolan County both faced unbeaten teams Friday in non-district play.
Highland hosted Gordon and the Hornets (2-4) fell by a score of 62-56, while Blackwell lost to Trent 65-16 to stay winless (0-6). Trent and Gordon are both 6-0.
Unfortunately, the Sweet-water Reporter was unable to get additional information by Sundayâ€™s deadline on both six-man games.

The Sweetwater Middle School Colt tennis team recently played a match at Big Spring. Individual winners include the following:
Marc Butler won 7-6 (7-5 tiebreaker); Christian Ulbrich won 6-4; Tyler Stacy won 6-3; Mitchell Madden won 6-1; Alex Castillo won 6-2.
Brilee Kenny (7th grader) won 6-2; Crystal Foust (7th grader) won 6-4.
No. 3 team (names were not given) won 6-4.
Brook Hefner and Marc Butler won 6-1.

A Firefighter's Appreciation Dinner and Silent Auction will be held on Tuesday, October 11, 2011 at the Nolan County Coliseum Annex starting at 6:00 p.m. It will be sponsored by the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce.
The event will serve two purposes: to honor all area firefighters for their tireless efforts during this extreme wildfire season and to raise funds for the groups as well.
It's time to lace up those running shoes for a good cause--the 2011 Sweetwater Heart Walk.
The event is scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 8 at the Sweetwater Mustang track field. Registration will begin at 8:30 a.m., with the walk starting at 9 a.m. Participants can walk on the track or a route on the streets will be mapped out.
The local Heart Walk, a fundraising initiative which supports the American Heart Association (AHA), has been taking place for over 20 years. Usually held in the spring, event coordinator Jerrie Gee stated that this year's walk was moved to the fall.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 48 calls for service, issued two citations and made four arrests on Sept. 29, 2011.
The SPD received 19, 911 calls.
