Football player of the week

Mateo Gonzales is the Football Player of the Week for Sweetwater. Gonzales, a 225-pound senior defensive tackle, had a team-high six solo tackles — all of them behind the line — and assisted on five other tackles for the Mustangs against Snyder this past Friday. He also had one quarterback pressure.

Mustang Band Aces UIL Contest

On Monday night, Oct. 17, amidst roaring winds and blowing sand, the Sweetwater High School Marching Band put on a classy performance to earn them straight “1s” in UIL marching competition in Abilene. “We knew the bad weather was on the way, and it hit just as the band was preparing to perform,” explained band booster photographer Carola Martin. “We braced ourselves, and the band played and marched like it was a walk in the park.”

Early voting begins Tuesday

Early voting for the Texas Constitutional Amendment Election begins on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, in the Nolan County Clerk's Office, located at 100 E. Third Street, Suite 108 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday until Friday, Nov. 4, 2011. The last day for the County Clerk to receive an application to vote by mail is Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2011. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011. Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Rehab fundraisers this week

For the second year in a row, there will be two back-to-back fundraising events associated with the Round-Up for Rehab in Sweetwater to raise dollars for the West Texas Rehabilitation Center. A Shrimp Peel dinner and auction will be held at the Nolan County Annex on Tuesday evening, Oct. 25, the night before the sale at Sweetwater Auction which will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 26.

Rangers even Series

The Texas Rangers evened the World Series at two games apiece with a 4-0 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Sunday at Rangers Ballpark in Arlington. Pictured here is Texas slugger Josh Hamilton hitting a single during Saturday's game against the Cardinals. Game 5 is tonight in Arlington.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 41 calls for service, issued two citations and made seven arrests on Oct. 20, 2011.

The SPD received 14, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 400 block of NE Georgia.
• Family violence assault — 1000 block of Oak Street.
• Family violence assault — 900 block of Circle Drive.
• Disorderly conduct — 1200 block of Ragland.
Arrested by SPD:
• Calvin Pittman, 53 — Theft.
• Dustin Wells, 26 — Warrant.
• Adam Garza, 25 — Contributing to a minor.
• Shawn Garza, 20 — Minor in consumption.

Ward-led Tigers crush SW, 49-20

SNYDER — Keenon Ward was every bit as good as advertised on Friday.
Ward accounted for 411 yards — 217 rushing and 194 passing — and four touchdowns as Snyder over-whelmed Sweetwater 49-20 in a District 5-3A contest.
Snyder is now 2-1 in district (7-1 overall) and tied with Wylie for first place with two games remaining while Sweetwater fell to 4-5 overall, 1-2 in district.
Despite the loss, the Mustangs can still make the playoffs with a win Friday in their season finale against Brownwoood in Sweetwater. Brownwood (5-3, 1-1) was idle this week.

Highland loses district opener; Roscoe falls to Crosbyton 48-6

Highland lost to Ira, 46-0, in its district opener on Friday in a game called at halftime due to the six-man mercy rule, while Roscoe stayed winless this season after losing to first-place Crosbyton 48-6 in a District 7-A contest.

SW grid teams get one victory vs. Snyder

Jay Lomas scored two of Sweetwater White’s three touchdowns with a 1-yard run followed by a 27-yard catch from Kaegan Jeffrey. Jeffrey also threw a 46-yard touchdown pass to James Clift as well as a 2-point pass to Duanta Williams. Angel Caballero and Andrew Davis were defensive standouts for the Ponies.

Kris Duran’s 35-yard run was an offensive highlight for Sweetwater Red while on defense, Zach Garcia recorded a tackle for a loss.

Lady Stangs sweep Snyder

Win keeps SW in playoff picture
SNYDER — The Sweet-water High School volley-ball team swept past Snyder in three games Friday by scores of 25-15, 25-22 and 25-17, a convincing win that allowed the Lady Mustangs to keep their playoff hopes alive entering Tuesday’s season finale against Wylie.
