Holy Mass of Christian Burial for Maria M. Guerrero, 87, of Gail, Texas, will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 24, 2011, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church with Father Joe Uecker officiating. Interment will follow at Roscoe Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday Oct. 23, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories, recited by Connie Palacios and Pauline Gauna.
Jewel F. Campbell, age 90, of Sweetwater, Texas passed away on Thursday, Oct. 20, 2011, at Nolan Nursing and Rehab.
Graveside services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22, 2011 at Sweetwater Cemetery with Robert Squires officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Jewel was born Feb. 14, 1921, in Bartlett, Texas to John and Hulda (Hightower) Stone. She married C.H. Campbell on Aug. 26, 1939, in Roby, Texas. She was a Baptist. She worked as a waitress for many restaurants including Waffle Shop, and Jordanâs.
ROSCOE â Patricia Jean âPatâ Karonika was born Oct. 30, 1947, in Houston, Texas. She attended schools in LaGrange, Texas and Roscoe, Texas. She has been a resident of Abilene since 1967. She had worked for HEB for several years and served on the advisory board of the Betty Hardwick Center. She had been a participant of Special Olympics and received several trophies for bowling. She was attending Sears Senior Center and was a volunteer until a decline in her health.
Sweetwater High Schoolâs football and volleyball teams are heading to Snyder today for what could be consider-ed their last âdoubleheaderâ of the 2011 season, and the rivalry between the schools wonât be the only thing on both teamsâ minds.
The SHS football team, which is 1-1 in district play after a 28-6 win last week over Big Spring, must win one of its last two games to have a playoff shot. Snyder (1-0) is tied with Wylie for first place and leads both Sweetwater and Brownwood by a half-game.
A family was saved by members of the Sweetwater Police Department in a kidnapping incident that began in Sweetwater on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011 and ended in Frederick, Okla. on Monday, Oct. 10, 2011.
The final event of the Big County BEST (Boosting Engineering, Science and Technology) Robotics competition is slated for Saturday, Oct. 22, at the Sweetwater campus of TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas. Machine Check-In Day will be on Friday, Oct. 21, starting at noon in the TSTC Sweetwater Student Center. This will lead into the final event, Contest Day, on Saturday, Oct. 22, when the actual competition will take place.
Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director Dennis Cumbie announced that in response to drought conditions, the Texas FSA State Committee authorized emergency grazing use of Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) acres for 92 Texas counties effective Nov. 1, 2011, for the fiscal year (FY) 2012 winter/spring period. Emergency grazing for FY 2011 ends on Oct. 31, 2011.
Petticoats on the Prairie is again coming to West Texas. "Petticoats on the Prairie is a vintage article and antique showcase that West Texas people can come to for the weekend and not have to travel across the state,â explained free-lance designer Cecilia Scott, who with several other women who call themselves the Rodeo Queens, are behind the event. Scott, a Colorado City native who came back to West Texas to live in the family home made from an old church, believes wide open rural spaces foster a greater percentage of creativity than cities.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 13 calls for service, issued no citations and made no arrests on Oct. 18, 2011.
The SPD received 1, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had six calls for service, served one civil paper and made one arrest on Oct. 18, 2011.
