Retailers prepare for Black Friday

Retailers are making it even easier this year for shoppers to pull an all-nighter from Thanksgiving Thursday to Black Friday.
The unofficial holiday began in the 1960s to usher in the beginning of the Christmas shopping season, allowing for businesses to move from the "red" to the "black" in their financial records. Today, the rush of the sales and crowds in the stores have allowed for outlets to expand their early-morning hours even into the late night prior to Black Friday.

Robotics teams compete at regional level

Roscoe Collegiate High School and Sweetwater High School competed this past weekend in the BEST robotics regional competition in the Dallas. Event sponsor was the University of Texas at Dallas.
Approximately 1,500 students from 56 teams across Texas and New Mexico came to compete in presentations, exhibits, spirit and sportsmanship, engineering notebooks and robot performance.

Quail population declining, many possible causes

The Nolan County Extension Office and Leadership Advisory Board of the county recently held their annual Interpretive Luncheon on Thursday, Nov. 17, 2011 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Zach Wilcox, the AgriLife Extension agent for Nolan County, opened the "Making a Difference in Nolan County," lunch by thanking those who assisted in preparing the event and offered a brief overview of the year.

The SPD received 16, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 13 calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on Nov. 21, 2011.

• Ector Joe Martinez, 31, of Sweetwater — Warrant/theft by check.
• Jonee Meg Miller, 30, of Abilene — Judgement.

Wanda Faye Dunn

Funeral services for Wanda Faye Dunn, 77, of Roscoe, are pending with McCoy Funeral Home.
Dunn died Wednesday, Nov. 23, 2011, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.

Luella Hutchinson

November 23, 2011

Luella Hutchinson, 83, of Sweetwater, passed away Monday, Nov. 21, 2011, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Luella was born to the parentage of Wilson Domangue and Ella Hutchinson in Terrebone Parrish, La. on April 23,1928. Luella married the love of her life, Ronald Hutchinson in Sweetwater in 1948 and to this union came two daughters and a son. She worked at Simmons Memorial Hospital as a Lab-X-Ray technician and loved the work she did.

Andrews boys topple Mustangs

One night after getting a dramatic win over Colorado City on a buzzer-beater by Taylor Jones, the 5-9 senior poured in a season-high 21 points while Sweetwater got off to a good start here Tuesday against Andrews.
However, Jones didn’t get a lot of scoring help as no other Mustang player was able to reach double figures, and the visiting Mustangs came away with a 59-41 win. The game was basically decided in the third quarter, when Andrews outscored Sweetwater 19-8 after leading just 27-22 at halftime.

Lady Stangs held in check by Ab. Cooper

A three-game gauntlet against Class 5A foes is finally over for the Sweetwater girls basketball team.
Tuesday’s 46-27 loss to Abilene Cooper was the Lady Mustangs’ third in a row after a 3-0 start. The Lady Coogs held Sweetwa-ter to just eight field goals and its lowest point total of the young season.

Highland gets split

Highland split a basket-ball doubleheader against Spur on Tuesday. The girls (4-1) won, 53-29, for their fourth straight victory but the boys (1-2) fell to Spur by a score of 37-27.
For the girls, Sierra Allen scored 20 points while Kara Hughey (16) and Beth Rich-burg (11) were also able to reach double figures. Jessica McCain had four and Lora Stewart two for Highland, which led 16-5, 30-10 and 35-16 at the quarter breaks.
