Thanks largely to a pair of big scoring runs â one in each half â Sweetwater gave Candice Wyatt a successful debut as head girls basketball coach here on Tuesday, as the Lady Mustangs held on to beat Highland 40-30.
With the game tied 11-11 early in the second quarter, Sweetwater ran off 15 straight points en route to a commanding 26-12 halftime advantage.
Funeral services for R.J. âToadâ Monroe, 86, of Sweetwater, are pending with McCoy Funeral Home.
Monroe died Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Julian Lopez Reyes, 78, of Colorado City, passed away Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, at Mitchell County Hospital. Funeral services will be Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011, at Saint Annâs Catholic Church. Father Michael Udegbunam will officiate. Rosary will be at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011 at Kiker-Seale Funeral Home.
4 p.m. Update:
Day three of the Aubrey Phillip Childers case continued on Wednesday, November 9, 2011 at the Nolan County Courthouse. Testimony was heard from three local law enforcement officers who were involved in the case, and the jury saw the video interview of Mr. Childers with Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) Detective Sam Cunningham.
The second day of the Aubrey Phillip Childers case continued on Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at the Nolan County Courthouse with 32nd Judicial District Court Judge Glen Harrison presiding.

Pre Veterans Day activities for sisters from Sweetwater included a trip to Washington, D.C., meeting celebrity chef Paula Dean, touring Wounded Warrior facilities and assisting with a donation for the WASP Museum.
This past Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, âButter Queenâ Paula Deen hosted a VIP event that included sisters Boo Nemir and Caroline Chorn.Â
Nemir and Chorn met with Deen after she appeared in the Metropolitan Cooking and Entertaining Show of D.C.
The ladies talked about the show and Deenâs new book, The Paula Deen Southern Cooking BIBLE.
Sweetwater Masonic Lodge 571 has an open called meeting Saturday, Nov. 12. A covered dish meal will be served at 6 p.m. with a meeting to follow. The meeting has been called to present the Golden Trowel Award to Glen Wortham and the Community Builder Award to the Woman's Forum.
Nolan County USDA Farm Service Agency (FSA) Executive Director, Dennis Cumbie urges producers who want to purchase coverage through the Noninsurable Crop Disaster Assistance Program (NAP) to do so before the sales closing date of Dec. 1, 2011.
NAP provides financial assistance to producers of noninsurable crops when low yields/grazing loss, loss of inventory or prevented planting occur due to normal disasters.
The following crops have a NAP application closing date of Dec. 1, 2011: grazing and forage/hay on native and improved grass, honey, potatoes, radishes, grapes and caneberries.
The WASP Museum will host a Veterans Day celebration, Run for the WASP, a benefit 5K run and 1.3 mile walk beginning at 1p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011. Cost is $25 per person and $20 for pre-registered students and military personnel. Cost is $25 on the day of the race for any runner or walker. Register by clicking on âRun for the WASPâ button on the top right of the WASP Museum homepage (www.waspmuseum.org), print registration page and mail with entry fee to: National WASP WWII Museum, P.O. Box 456, Sweetwater, TX 79556. There will be awards for 10 year age groups.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 33 calls for service, issued one citation and made three arrests on Nov. 7, 2011.
The SPD received 11, 911 calls.
