Jacinda Morales of Roscoe had a time of 13:09.17 on Saturday to place 18th out of 103 girls runners in the Class 1A division at the state cross country meet held at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock.
Morales, a senior, had a regional time of 12:37.24 the prevous week at the regional cross country meet. She was making her second state appearance.
Since 2004, Bahlman Cleaners has collected over 1,000 gently worn winter garments for men, women and children who otherwise would be without one, according to owner Janice Pridemore. Bahlman's mission is simple: anyone in the region in need of a coats shall receive one in possible.
When Bahlman's first started the drive in 2004, it brought in 300-350 coats. Bahlman Cleaners' Coats for Kids continues to grow each year, but this year donations are lower than usual. However, the cleaners are seeking help from more and more community partners and hope that the results will be impressive.
Highlandâ€™s Junior High Crowning for 2011 was held on Oct. 27, 2011. Matthew Leyba, son of Lelo and Mary Ann Leyba, was crowned Highlandâ€™s Junior High Football Hero. He is in the eighth grade. Kelsi Johns, daughter of Jimmy and Mitzie Johns, was crowned Highlandâ€™s Junior High Football Sweetheart. She is in the eighth grade. The crown bearers were Blake Bankhead, son of Bryan and Jennifer Bankhead and Kinley Hoelscher, daughter of Allen and Sha Hoelscher. Both are in Highlandâ€™s pre-k class.

A contractor for the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) will refresh pavement markings on roadways in 11 counties within the Abilene District over the next few months.
More than 200 miles of pavement will receive new markings under the contract. The reflectivity of pavement markings diminishes over time due to wear and tear from traffic, sunlight and weather conditions, said Roy Wright, P.E., Transportation Operations Director for TxDOTâ€™s Abilene District.
The Abilene Chamber of Commerce will host Representative Susan L. King on Thursday, Nov. 17, 201, at the Abilene Convention and Visitor's Bureau at 1101 North First Street in Abilene at 5:30 p.m.
Representative King will open the forum with a short presentation on the interim work of the 82nd Legislature and will then conduct open discussion with opportunities for questions and answers.
Melton E. Kiddy, age 74. passed away Saturday, Nov. 12, 2011, in Arlington, Texas. Mel was born June 23, 1937 in Dallas, Texas to the late Ernest and Willie Mae Kiddy. He married Linda Darden June 8, 1965.
Funeral services for Viola Marie Walker, 77, of Blackwell, TX will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, 2011 at Blackwell Methodist Church with Rev. Scott Wesley officiating.
Interment will follow at Blackwell Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Walker died Nov. 14, 2011, in Granbury, TX.
Bennia Rackley Carter, age 49, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Thursday, Nov. 10, 2011 at her residence.
Her body will be cremated. A memorial service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Bennia was born on Jan. 4, 1962, in Lubbock, Texas. She married Brian K. Carter on Feb. 27, 1997, in DeSoto, Texas.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 54 calls for service, issued 16 citations and made one arrest on Nov. 10, 2011.
