November 11th
Joyce Harris, 82, of Big Spring, died Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2011, at her residence. The family will receive friends from 5:30-6:30 p.m. on Thursday at Myers & Smith Funeral Home. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, at Myers & Smith Chapel with Rev. Don Snipes, officiating. Graveside services will be at 4 p.m. at the Sweetwater Cemetery.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 35 calls for service, issued two citations and made one arrest on Nov. 9, 2011.
The SPD received 29, 911 calls.

The Sweetwater White Flag Mustangs, a Pee Wee football team made up of 5-and-6-year-olds, is shown during and after their 40-18 playoff win over Abileneâs Jets at Abileneâs Curly Hays Field this past Saturday. The Mustangs hope to celebrate another win when they return to Abilene this Saturday to face the Abilene Bucs in the next round of the playoffs.
Sweetwater and Blackwell are hosting a total of three high school football playoff games today.
In Class 1A, Division I, Seymour (8-2) plays New Deal (7-3) at 7:30 p.m. at Sweetwaterâs Mustang Bowl while in Six-Man, Blackwell is hosting a doubleheader.
Sterling City (8-2) will take on Panther Creek (6-4) at 5:30 p.m., followed by Paint Rock (8-2) taking on Loraine (7-3) at 8 p.m. to complete the doubleheader.
Snyder and Brownwood both kicked off their playoff runs with double-digit vic-tories on Thursday.
November 10th
Day three of the Aubrey Phillip Childers case continued on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Testimony was heard from three local law enforcement who were involved in the case in the early morning. The jury also saw two video interviews of Mr. Childers with Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) Detective Sam Cunningham, which spanned most of the day.
Mr. Childers is on trail for an incident occurring on or around Aug. 15, 2010, regarding a male-on-male sexual assault which took place around the southwest part of Sweetwater.
Many stopped near a large cloud of smoke between Sweetwater and Roscoe on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011 and many in town wondered what caused the smoke cloud. A local landowner had permission from Nolan County to create a controlled burn once winds from the north stopped. Part of the burn was near an abandoned house and members of the Sweetwater Fire Department were called and stood by for good measure. The burn remained under control.
On Oct. 15, members from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Sweetwater went to Brownwood to take part in their town's Pride for Areas Surrounding Schools (PASS) program. Over 250 came from the churches in Abilene, Brownwood, San Angelo, Eastland, Sweetwater and Brady. Donning yellow slipover tops which read "Mormon Helping Hands," they scraped and painted eight homes near the Brownwood Intermediate School. The purpose was to beautify the neighborhood around the school and to make it a safer environment through which the students walk each day.
In celebration of its upcoming 120 year anniversary, Hochheim Prairie Insurance unveiled a new corporate logo during its annual agent conference on Oct. 9 and 10 in San Antonio, Texas. The agent conference was attended by 225 representatives of agencies appointed with Hochheim Prairie Insurance across the state including Russell High from High Agency of Sweetwater.
"The new design proudly embraces the company's unique name, connecting it to 120 years of history and heritage. The addition of the lone star emphasizes the company's exclusively Texas focus," says Dave Talbert, president.
Toad was born March 22, 1925 to Lou and Elinor Estes Monroe. He was the fourth child born of 10 from Nolan, Texas. Toad married Sadie Jewel Perry on May 31, 1947 in Nolan, Texas. They moved to Sweetwater in 1951 where they built their home. He passed away on Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2011, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital at the age of 86. Toad worked in the oil field for over 30 years as a heavy equipment operator and had worked for Britt Construction and T&R Oilfield Construction, where he retired at the age of 70.
