Band Members Win Honors

Last Saturday six members of the Sweetwater High School Band traveled to Lubbock to audition for All-Region honors. All six students won positions in the All-Region Band. Sweetwater had the third most students out of twenty-eight participating schools.
Students making All-Region were junior Laura Duclos – baritone, junior Briana Rosas – trombone, freshman Clay Kitchens – trumpet, sophomore Stephen Le – French horn, Sophomore Chase Scott – alto saxophone, and sophomore Crysten Ivy – clarinet. The All-Region Band will present a concert at Lubbock-Cooper High School on Saturday, January 29th.

Pets available for adoption

Sweetwater Animal Control currently has six pets available for adoption.
One of the adoptable pets is a blonde male lab mix. Another is a female brown chihuahua. Also available is a male blue heeler puppy as well as a brown female heeler puppy. A male pointer mix, colored brown and white is up for adoption as well. Another brown and white male mix breed is available for adoption to a loving home. According to Sweetwater's new animal control officer, Don Kite, animals that are picked up are kept for a minimum of three days, but he tries to keep them from a week to 10 days.

SEED Board of Directors Meeting

The SEED (Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development) Board of Directors met for their monthly meeting on Monday morning, December 12, 2011 at the Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce.
Jim Clements with Oncor attended the meeting to discuss two issues: an update on the CREZ transmission project and the SEED Business Park lighting.
With five substations, a majority of the CREZ line has been completed. From a more narrow perspective, the local area has already been energized.

Nolan County Commissioners Meet

December 14, 2011

The Nolan County Commissioners met for their regular meeting on Monday morning, December 12, 2011 at the Nolan County Courthouse, with several presentations being made on a variety of matters.
Three county residents presented an ongoing situation on County Road 235 to the court about several vehicles that drive at excessive speeds. Currently, no speed limit or warning signs are posted on the road.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 32 calls for service, issued five citations and made five arrests on Dec. 12, 2011.

The SPD received three, 911 calls.

Arrested by SPD:
• Juvenile, 15 — Disorderly conduct/fighting.
• Juvenile, 15 — Disorderly conduct/fighting.
• Juvenile, 16 — Disorderly conduct/fighting.
• Juvenile, 16 — Disrupting classroom activity.
• Eaon Acorn, 17 — Disorderly conduct/fighting/disrupting classroom activity.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had eight calls for service, served zero civil papers and made two arrests on Dec. 12, 2011.

Denver Leeon Pettitt

Denver Leeon Pettitt, 77, of Big Spring, died on Sunday, December 11, 2011. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Thursday, December 15, 2011 at the 14th and Main Church of Christ with Rick Cunningham, Doyle Maynard and Ralph Anderson, officiating. Interment will follow at Trinity Memorial Park. 
The family will receive friends from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM, Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at the funeral home.

John Morgan

December 14, 2011

After running a really great race, John Morgan crossed the "finish line" for which he'd been preparing his whole life. He died after a brief illness on December 11, 2011, at the age of 79.

Larry Othel Barnhill

Larry Othel Barnhill passed away Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011 at his residence in Winters, Texas. Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, 2011 at the Texas Veterans Cemetery in Abilene, Texas under the direction of Winters Funeral Home with Rev. Ronnie Freeman of Trent First Baptist Church officiating.

Jackson gets hon. mention

Senior offensive lineman Malcolm Jackson of Sweetwater received all-state honorable mention to the Texas Associated Press Sports Editors Class 3A football team that was released Tuesday.
The 5-7, 260-pounder earned all-district honors in November. He was one of 14 players from District 5-3A who received all-state recognition.
Brownwood kicker Mat-thew McCrane, Big Spring punter Devin Roberson and Brownwood defensive back Kevin Vaccaro made the second team.

SW hoopsters have big nights, but teams come away with split

Sweetwater’s Kaleb Hoo-ver and Alicia Finn both had big individual games on the road in non-district basketball action Tuesday, but only Finn’s team was able to pick up a victory.
Finn scored a career-high 30 points, and also grabbed 13 rebounds while getting five steals as Sweetwater defeated Lamesa, 51-44, thanks to a huge rally in the fourth quarter. A 21-8 finish allowed the Lady Mustangs to overcome a 36-3o deficit after three periods and get their third straight win.
