AAA Texas to offer free tipsy tow service

If you’re a driver who has too much to drink, or you’re a party host, restaurant or bar owner who’s concerned about a guest that’s overindulged and you want to make sure that person gets home safely, AAA Texas is offering members and non-members alike our Tipsy Tow program to make sure everyone who needs a ride home gets home safely.

Health Department stresses salmonella awareness, prevention

The Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department is urging everyone to practice food safety to prevent the spread of salmonella through tips and facts from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
Salmonella, also called food poisoning, is a bacteria which commonly causes foodborne illnesses. Most recently, news headlines have been bombarded with outbreaks due in part to eggs, peanut products and other food which has been contaminated with salmonella.

Wildfire survivors have more time to register for federal assistance

Texas homeowners, renters and business owners who suffered losses caused by the wildfires on or after Aug. 30 have more time to apply for federal disaster recovery assistance, officials from the Texas Division of Emergency Management and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) said today.
At the request of the state, FEMA is extending the registration deadline to Jan. 6.

Statewide gas price average 80 cents lower than year high

As Texas families prepare for the New Year, the average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Texas is four cents more than the average last week, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch. The current statewide average is $3.09.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 36 calls for service, issued two citations and made two arrests on Dec. 28, 2011.

The SPD received 23, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 100 block of Bluebonnet.
• 500 block of E. Broadway.

Arrested by SPD:
• Samuel Crespin, 42 — Accident involving damage.
• Naomi Kidd, 28 — Warrants.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 12 calls for service, served no civil papers and made one arrest on Dec. 28, 2011.

Arrested by DPS:
• Toni Lorraine Cruz, 20, of Abilene — Possession of marijuana and driving while intoxicated.
