The Texas State Technical College Staff Senate organized a non-perishable food and toy drive to benefit the school's food pantry and the Sweetwater Goodfellows. Staff Senate members invited any and all to donate to the cause before donating the items to their respective entities on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011.
Last Friday the Sweetwater High School Band completed a whirlwind tour of five campuses in six hours, performing at Sweetwater Intermediate School, J.P. Cowen Early Childhood Center, East Ridge Elementary School, Southeast Elementary School and Sweetwater Middle School. The band performed for over 2000 students.
The band performed a variety of holiday favorites, including Leroy Andersonâ€™s Sleigh Ride. â€śIt was so neat watching the little kids faces when they heard the crack of a whip or the horse whinny,â€ť commented junior baritone soloist Laura Duclos.
Broadway Baptist Church in Sweetwater, located at 710 E. Third, will be celebrating its 80th anniversary this weekend with back-to-back special events.
On Dec. 10, 1931, eleven people met in an abandoned broom factory to begin an independent, mission-minded Baptist church. Nicknamed the â€śOld Mule Barnâ€ť for its structure and hay-covered floors, the members met there until a building was constructed on the same corner.
Local sports fans who are needing their high school football fix and don't want to travel can watch the Mules play the Cardinals tonight.
Football teams from Muleshoe and Melissa will be in Sweetwater today for a Class 2A, Division I state semifinal playoff starting at 7 p.m. at Mustang Bowl.
Tickets for the playoff game will be sold for $7 each at the gate.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 60 calls for service, issued 12 citations and made one arrest on Dec. 7, 2011.
The SPD received 19, 911 calls.

James Albert Jones, age 72, of Blackwell, Texas passed away on Thursday, Dec. 8, 2011, at his residence.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, Dec. 12, 2011, at Blackwell Cemetery with Rev. John Curry officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Sweetwaterâ€™s teams were both first-round losers at the Stanton tournament on Thursday. The boys (4-6) lost to Midland Christian 53-39 while the girls (6-8) lost 56-37 in their opener against Midland Classical.
Kaleb Hoover scored 14 points and Taylor Jones 13 for the boys, who were scheduled to play again at 1:30 p.m. today. The girls, who got 14 points from Alicia Finn and 10 from Kendra Crosson, played Stantonâ€™s JV at 10:30 a.m.
At Highlandâ€™s tourna-ment, both the Roscoe and Highland girls won though the Plowgirls also lost. The teams play each other at 6:30 p.m. today.
Holiday blood drives will take place in Sweetwater on Thursday, Dec. 15. Meek Blood Center will have a bloodmobile at the Courthouse and another at the Lions Club building from noon until 6 p.m. The blood collected at these drives will help ensure blood availability for the upcoming holidays. Sixty eight donors participated in the community blood drives that took place on Sept. 29.
A blood drive took place at Sweetwater High School on Nov. 30. Ninety one students participated and 78 pints of blood were collected.
