The Nolan County Commissioners met for their final regular meeting of 2011 on Tuesday morning, Dec. 27 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
The commissioners approved the purchase of one mobile radio for the Sheriff's Office. Nolan County Sheriff David Warren noted that the majority of the purchase will be paid off by the Homeland Security grant from 2010, which will finish off the grant.
The 2011 Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital Employee of the Year is Keri Halford. The announcement was made at the RPMH Christmas awards ceremony.
Halford was presented her plaque and monetary award by Rosa Best, CNO. Halford was described as dedicated and professional and one who goes above and beyond in her job duties. Best praised her for numerous compliments from co-workers and patients.
Sweetwater Animal Control currently has one pet available for adoption.
The pet available for adoption this week is a male husky mix puppy, about one year old.
Dogs and cats are available for adoption for a $15 fee and the cost of getting the pet vaccinated for rabies.
The pets are required to have their vaccination before they leave to their new homes.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 120 calls for service, issued six citations and made three arrests from Dec. 23-26, 2011.
The SPD received 85, 911 calls.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 41 calls for service, served six civil papers and made four arrests from Dec. 21-26, 2011.

Felton Newton Kerley, 80, of Rockwall, Texas, passed away Dec. 25, 2011.Â Felton was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather, as well as a beloved friend to many.Â He will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.Â Felton was born on March 26, 1931 in Comanche, Texas to Elmer and Thelma Kerley.Â Felton graduated from Comanche High School in 1949.Â He later graduated from Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas in 1961 with a degree in business education.
A 41-year-old man died early Christmas morning in a fire in his Sweetwater home.
According to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden, firefighters received a call about smoke coming from a house on the 200 block of Lewis Front Street between 2 and 3 a.m. on Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011. "People saw smoke coming from the house and called 9-1-1."

Attention agriculture and timber producers: Secure your sales tax exemption by getting your registration number before the Jan. 1, deadline. Under a new state law passed by the Texas Legislature in 2011, commercial agriculture or timber producers will need an Ag/Timber Number issued by the Comptrollerâ€™s office to make eligible sales tax-exempt purchases for their business beginning Jan. 1, 2012.
Sergio Leonel Rivera, 41, of Sweetwater, died Sunday, Dec. 25, 2011, at his residence in Sweetwater.
His body was cremated and his ashes will be returned to his home in Guatemala.
Verna Lee Allen, 89, died Saturday, Dec. 24, 2011, peacefully in the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital. Services will be Wednesday, Dec. 28, at McCoy Funeral Home, 401 East 3rd in Sweetwater, with Ron McElyea officiating. Burial will follow at the Nolan Cemetery in Nolan, TX.
Verna Hamrick was born on March 8, 1922, in Sweetwater, Texas. She was the middle of three children, one older brother, J.J. and younger sister Irene all raised in Clyde, TX. She married James T. (J.T.) Allen on March 16, 1941 in Baird, TX.
