January 6th
Two Class 1A, Division II Nolan County basketball teams, the Highland girls and Blackwell boys, both won their district games on Tuesday.
Highland’s girls (12-9) are 3-1 in District 11 after winning at Loraine 59-48. The Lady Hornets over-came a 28-26 halftime deficit as Callie Sandusky scored 18 points and Shy-an Womack 15 for the winners. Sierra Allen had eight points, Kara Hughey and Beth Richburg seven and Lora Stewart and Jes-sica McCain two apiece.
Blackwell’s boys are 1-1 in District 12 after beat-ing Paint Rock 46-30.
The Sweetwater junior varsity girls and boys basketball teams had easy wins on Tuesday at Roby.
The JV girls won 40-19 in improving their season mark to an impressive 17-1, while holding Roby to just one point in the first half.Janell Walker had 13 points and Elise Lawrence 11 to pace the victory, while Kelsi Crosson had five, Kathleen Campbell and Shelby Cason four and Ashley Kincheloe, Whitnee Murff and Destiny Osteen one point each.
The JV boys (9-7) pulled away in the second half to win their game 38-17.

Shown is one of the new transmission towers being installed at the east entrance to Sweetwater off of I-20. This is part of the Texas Public Utility Commission's (PUC) $5 billion transmission line expansion to move West Texas wind power toward North Texas and Houston. These lines and routes were established as part of the Competitive Renewable Energy Zone (CREZ). Oncor was one of the successful bidders to build the lines. Of the $5 billion dollar project, Oncor received $1.34 billion for their part of the construction and installation of the new transmission lines.
A broken water line from the second floor of Adkins Supply in Sweetwater flooded the lower level area of the building on Tuesday. A water cleaning crew was cleaning up the water damage that covered the lower level flooring throughout the day.
Jeremy Maxwell, 29, died Sunday, Jan. 2, 2011, at an Abilene medical center.
Born in Aurora, Colo. on June 14, 1981, Jeremy was the son of Billy Patrick Maxwell and Janet Marie May Maxwell. He married Kami Shea Alexander on June 28, 2003 in Abilene, and moved from Sweetwater to Abilene eight years ago. He was a member of Broadview Baptist Church in Abilene.
Jeremy had struggled for the past five years as a quadriplegic as the result of a near fatal car accident in San Angelo, Texas when he was a student at Angelo State University.
ROBY — The Sweetwater girls basketball team is star-ting out 2011 the way it finished in 2010.
And the Lady Mustangs’ 42-30 win on Tuesday at Roby came against a peren-nial state power.
Sweetwater (15-9) trailed only once — at 7-6 — against the Lady Lions, who came into the contest ranked No. 6 in Class 1A, Division II.
Tuesday’s victory was the ninth in the last 10 games for Sweetwater, which goes to Mineral Wells Friday before tipping off District 5-3A play next week at home against Snyder.
ROBY — Since a 4-1 start, little has gone right for the Sweetwater boys basketball team in the past month.
But that changed, at least for one night, on Tuesday when the Mustangs visited Roby and won 43-40.
Sweetwater’s 6-8 senior post, Paxton Kelley, scored 19 points as the Mustangs (6-12) won for only the second time in 13 games.
Roby led 7-6 after one quarter, but Kelley hit three straight baskets to fuel an 8-0 run at the start of the second period and Sweetwa-ter led 19-16 at halftime.

As stated in Brookshire’s Thanks A Million Collect And Win Game rules, if specific prizes weren’t claimed during the contest period, there would be random drawings held Dec. 10 among all eligible sweepstakes entries received in the Food Club Carnival Cruise Sweepstakes, and Kim Lewis from Sweetwater, Texas, has won the Ford F-150 prize valued at $50,000.
The Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce will have their monthly coffee event at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 5, 2011, at the Nolan County Coliseum, located at 1699 Cypress Street in Sweetwater. Use the East entrance to the Coliseum. The Nolan County Coliseum is a beehive of activity virtually every weekend of the year. Not only does it host the Sweetwater Jaycees World’s Largest annual Rattlesnake Round-Up, but it also has livestock shows, cutting horse shows, rodeos, civic events, arts and crafts shows, specialty products expositions and a variety of community events.
Funeral services for Gordon Dean "Pop" Bales, 84, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 8, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Jimmy Don Bennett officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home. The Nolan County Honor Guard will perform military graveside rites.
