Members of the Sweetwater Jaycees took nine rattlesnakes to show off at the Capitol Wednesday and Thursday to promote the Sweetwater Jaycees World's Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up which will be held March 11-13, in Sweetwater. The Jaycees visited with Representative Susan King and Governor Rick Perry and promoted rattlesnake safety and awareness. The Nolan County Commissioners' Court met for its regular meeting on Monday morning, Feb. 14 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
Various approvals were made at the meeting regarding equipment, including replacing the current Guardian courthouse security equipment with a new system from Centurion Wireless security systems.
A large grass fire in Fisher County burned about 400 acres on Monday afternoon according to authorities. Smoke filled the air in Sweetwater, due to yesterday's high winds. No residences were lost, but a number of barns and horse pens were lost due to the flames burning the tall, dry grass. Authorities say that there were two separate fires burning in the area and the cause of the fires in unknown.
The Sweetwater High School girls placed first and the boys were fourth on Saturday at the Clyde powerlifting meet. Sweetwater hosts a qualifying meet this Saturday.
Three Nolan County high school boys basketball teams get to play the role of spoiler when they end their regular seasons today, although one of them still has a shot at advancing to the postseason playoffs.
The Highland girls basketball team has had three different head coaches in the past three years. But the program continues to be one of the most successful in West Texas at any level.
Highland (19-11), which was the District 11-A, Division II runnerup this season with a 10-2 record, is about to make its 10th consecutive playoff appearance. The Lady Hornets will take on Robert Lee (19-10), the third-place team from District 12-A, Division II, in a bi-district matchup at 7 p.m. today in Bronte.
