High Sky Children's Ranch, Inc. in Midland opened its doors in 1963 under the direction of a concerned citizen, Joan Nobles, as a home for girls who had no place to go. In 1985, they changed their license to accept both boys and girls, enabling them to keep sibling groups together. High Sky was re-licensed yet again in 1987 as a treatment facility to work with more traumatized, higher level of care children and later as a therapeutic foster care. The programs provide a structure with life skills as well as therapeutic services.

Quilling display is February library art exhibit

February 8, 2011

The February art exhibit at the County-City Library is a quilling display by Betty Oliver of Abilene.
Oliver began quilling in 2004, when her husband first became ill. "I had seen the work in art digest books for many years and thought it was interesting. When my husband got sick I decided to take up the art because he would get anxious when I left the room. I purchased the materials I needed for the art and worked on it while I stayed in the room with my husband."
Oliver has been an artist for many years, specializing in oil paintings before she went to quilling.

As expected, the No. 14 Lady Bulldogs (8-0 district, 20-13) won, 58-38.
But the Lady Mustangs (1-6), after a rough first half, regrouped rather impressively and held their own with Wylie over the final two periods.
