City election set for May 14

The City Commission met for their regular session meeting on Tuesday morning, Feb. 8 at City Hall.
Several items for approval were presented at the meeting. Among them was the ordinance ordering for an election to be held on May 14. During this city election, voters would be electing for mayor and city commissioners in Precincts 1 and 3. The ordinance was approved.

Second Annual Ridin’ for Cash Bull Bash to be a bigger event

The second annual “Ridin’ for Cash” Bull Bash will be an even larger event than last year, with many vendor booths being set up before the action begins. The event will be held at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at the Nolan County Coliseum. Doors will open at 5 p.m. so that those attending will have time to visit vendor booths, the silent auction and the concession stand.
There will be about 30 vendors that will be selling many items including leather goods, jewelry, candles, Scentsy items, clothes, crosses and much more.

Ribbon cutting held for Sweetwater Auto-Tire

Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors were on hand at Sweetwater Auto-Tire on Tuesday for a ribbon cutting and open house for the new business. The business is located at 1509 Lamar Street and provides auto services including oil changes and unlocking vehicles and provides new and used tires including Firestone, Bridgestone, Goodyear, Cooper and more. Owners are Bill and Candace Jones and the manager is Manny Gutierrez. They can be reached at 325-236-8180.

Emily Rogers

Emily Ann (Mitchell) Rogers, 65, of Midland and formerly of the Trent-Merkel area, died Wednesday, Jan. 19, 2011.
She was cremated. Memorial services are to be held at noon on Saturday, Feb. 12, at Trent First Baptist Church.
Emily was born in Merkel. She lived most of her childhood and part of her adult life in the Trent-Merkel area. She worked hard all her life. She had many talents, including making ceramics, writing poetry, drawing and gardening. Her best talent was smiling. One of her sweet smiles could warm you when you were cold, make you happy when you were sad.

Kenneth Dale Hess

Kenneth Dale Hess, age 85, of Snyder, died Monday, Feb. 7, 2011, at his residence in Snyder.
Funeral services for Mr. Hess will be at 2 p.m. on Thursday at the Bell-Cypert-Seale Chapel with Rev. Loren Gardner officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Memorial Gardens under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Funeral Home.
Mr. Hess was born on May 7, 1925, to John Wesley and Nora (Barnett) Hess. He married Francis Marie Lewis on Dec. 2, 1945, at Pyron. She preceded him in death on March 16, 2005.

Brownwood beatdown

BROWNWOOD — The Brownwood Lions dominated the first and third quarters so much in Tuesday’s 51-23 win over Sweetwater that they could afford to rest their starters and play their subs in the other two periods.
The victory — which improved the Lions to 3-3 in District 5-3A — came almost entirely on the strength of a 16-minute stretch where Brownwood outscored Sweetwater 47-9.

Lady Mustangs fall to Lady Lions

BROWNWOOD — Brownwood’s No. 18 Lady Lions lived up to their state ranking Tuesday, running off the game’s first 10 points and never looking back in a 55-26 win over Sweetwater that ended the regular season for both teams.
Patricia Wilson had 19 points for Brownwood (6-2), which will be District 5-3A’s No. 2 playoff seed. Brownwood also stifled Sweetwater (1-7, 16-17) defensively, allowing just single-digit scoring in each of the first three quarters.
