The National Center for Educational Achievement (NCEA), a department of ACT, Inc., recognized Sweetwater Independent School District for having three schools in their district make the 2010 NCEA Higher Performing Schools List. The following schools received the honor and Higher Performing (HP) recognition in the following areas:
â€¢ Southeast Elementary School, Math and Reading - Higher Performing in all areas;
â€¢ Sweetwater Intermediate School, Math and Reading;
â€¢ Sweetwater Middle School, Social Studies.
Texas Alumni Football is coming to the Abilene area in April. Former high school players from Sweetwater and other neighboring schools are expected to put on the pads again with former teammates to comprise up to 12 alumni teams. The games are open to all alumni and the ages of the players will likely range from nineteen to mid-forties. Alumni teams will play an alumni team from their rival school.
A graveside service for Jimmie Watson "Jim" Brown, 85, of Sweetwater will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 15, 2011, at Sweetwater Cemetery with Lloyd Harris officiating. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Brown died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, at his home.
J.D. Davis, age 85, of Sweetwater, TX, departed this life on Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Feb. 19, 2011, at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Tommy Jackson officiating assisted by Rev. Robert Sweet. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangement are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.
Bobby Dale Underhil, 40, of Sweetwater, died Sunday, Feb. 13, 2011, in Sweetwater.
He was cremated and a private memorial service will be held at a later date.

The Roscoe boys basketball team needed a road win in Fridayâ€™s season-ending game to claim the final playoff spot from District 9-A, Division I.
But Munday had other ideas as the Moguls won, 68-42, to claim the third-place berth in the district.

This past year, Sweetwater High School may have fielded its youngest softball team since the program started in the mid-1990s.
An astounding seven freshmen, plus three sophomores and three juniors, comprised the teamâ€™s opening roster and all seven freshmen started.
Three of the four Sweet-water Middle School boys basketball teams came away with season-ending victories last week against Snyder.
The Sweetwater eighth grade Red boys won 42-28. Duante Williams had 12 points, Bray Amos and Rhett Torres nine, Isaiah McGee seven, Hayden Reeves three and J.P. Poe two.
The Sweetwater seventh grade Red boys won their game 48-27. Michael Hunt had 16 points. Cornelio Mendez eight, Michael Law-rence five, Adrian Vizzerra, Mark Lawrence and Joe Ruiz four, Denzell Moore three and Max Gomez and Hardy Escobar two apiece for the Colts.
