Girls lifters are 2nd at SW meet

The Sweetwater girls, serving as the host team, had two individual winners at their powerlifting meet held Saturday and also had a second-place team finish.
Kelsey Painter (670 total pounds) won the 132-pound class while Allie Zavaleta (595 pounds) won the 123-pound class for Sweetwater, which scored 32 points to finish behind only Abilene’s 42. Sixteen schools were represented in the meet.

Three SHS girls compete at Tech indoor track meet

Three members of the Sweetwater High School girls track team began their 2011 season by competing recently at an indoor invitational meet at Texas Tech University.
Jayci Shelton started out her senior year with a bang by collecting two medals at the meet. Shelton won the 55-meter hurdles with a time of 8.97 seconds in a field of 52 girls. Shelton also placed third — out of 150 competitors — in the girls 400-meter dash with a time of 1:01.57.

Fire burns 1300 acres

February 25, 2011

A Thursday afternoon fire consumed 1300 acres just West of Blackwell according to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden. Madden stated that the fire began on County Road 265 on Diamond Plate Ranch. The fire is thought to have been started by a lit cigarette being thrown on the road. Several homes were threatened by the fire, but were all saved. It took several entities from 2-10 p.m. to contain the blaze.

Residents asked to be cautious during fire season

Drought conditions, high winds and low humidity are prompting Texas Forest Service officials to predict a high risk for wildfire on Sunday, Feb. 27, in the Big Country.
The combination of ongoing drought, gusty winds and low humidity creates the potential for large and threatening wildfires. Texans should use caution and refrain from outdoor burning or other activities that could start a wildfire. No outdoor burning is authorized under the current burn bans issued by county officials.

Rotary clubs take on $200 million challenge from the Gates Foundation

Rotary clubs here and around the world are determined to do whatever it takes to achieve a world free of the crippling disease polio. A key component of that effort is fundraising. Rotary members are working to raise $200 million in response to a challenge grant of $355 million from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

Southeast named to prestigious honor roll

Southeast Elementary recently made the Texas Business and Education Coalition Honor Roll for 2010. Only 4% of the more than 8,000 public schools receive this honor and recognition. The TBEC Honor Roll is the most prestigious award for sustained, academic excellence in Texas. It recognizes schools that have demonstrated three years of consistent, high performance in all subjects compared to other schools serving similar student populations. Shown pictured in front of the banner of honor are the third grade teachers who traveled to Austin to be honored earlier this year.

RPMH, SNCHD host cholesterol screening

The Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital sponsored a free cholesterol screening on Thursday, Feb. 17, at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department, located at 301 E. 12th Street in Sweetwater.
Cholesterol can play a critical role in a person's health. It's important that all people know what their cholesterol level is and how it affects their risk of developing heart disease. People also need to learn about all the risk factors for heart disease.

Suddenlink plans $120 million TX investment  program

Suddenlink expects to invest nearly $120 million this year in Texas, and by the end of the year will have invested nearly a half-billion dollars in the state since 2006.
Suddenlink is the third-largest operator of its kind in Texas, offering cable TV, high-speed Internet, phone and other services. It has increased its capital spending in the state in recent months to help introduce new and enhanced services.

Roanna Stinnett

Roanna Stinnett, 72 of Sweetwater passed away Monday evening at an Abilene nursing center. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 26, 2011, at First Baptist Church in Aspermont officiated by Pastor Jacqueax Molyneaux with burial to follow in the Aspermont Cemetery under the care and direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Aspermont.
Roanna was born in Orianna, Texas to Roland and Ila Myers Parker. She married Charles E. Stinnett on June 1, 1957, in Aspermont, Texas. Roanna was a homemaker and a member of the First Baptist Church of Sweetwater.
