Many enjoy Round-Up carnival

Many area residents, as well as many from around the United States and other countries, enjoyed visiting Wright’s Amusement Park during the 53rd Annual Sweetwater Jaycees World’s Largest Rattlesnake Round-Up. Those attending enjoyed food and rides all weekend.

Colorectal cancer screening offered

Hendrick Cancer Center of Abilene will be at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department, located at 301 E. 12th in Sweetwater from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, March 31, 2011. They will be offering the fecal occult blood test. A new easier and more accurate test will be used this year. The fecal occult blood test is a simple at-home procedure that checks a stool sample for hidden blood, which can be a sign of cancer, polyps or other internal disorders. This test is your best insurance for detecting colorectal cancer when it may be easily cured by prompt treatment.

Sam Q. Underhill

Sam Q. Underhill, age 93, passed away on Sunday, March 13, 2011, at Sweetwater Healthcare Center. 
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 15, 2011, at Belvieu Cemetery with Rev. Phillip Thomas officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home. 
Sam was born Sept. 28, 1917, in Yowell, Texas to Ernest C. and Myra L. (Hamilton) Underhill. He married Claudine O. Tidmore on October 16, 1951 in New Mexico. He was a U.S Army World War II Veteran. He worked for ADM  as a supervisor for many years before retiring. 

Frankie Lee Toland

Frankie Lee Toland, age 90, passed away at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater, Texas on March 13, 2011. Services will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, March 17, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Dr. Cindy Cearley and Rev. Judy Hall officiating under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home in Sweetwater. Interment will follow in Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home. A visitation will be held Wednesday, March 16, 2011, from 6-8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home. Pallbearers will be Stephen Smith, Toland Smith, McC Smith, Zach Smith, Bo Compston and Paul Davis.

Ending on a high note

ABILENE — After losing its first four games by a combined score of 39-13, the Sweetwater High School baseball team roared back in Saturday’s finale of the Abilene Invitational tour-nament to crush Wylie 11-1 and end up on a high note.
Thanks to a big nine-run second inning and the pitching of Sterling Reeves, who allowed just three hits, the Mustangs easily defeated a Wylie team that came in with three straight wins.
All nine of Sweetwater’s starters scored at least once in the contest. Reeves, Connor Stafford and Kris Mayes each had two RBI and Mayes had a double.

Two Mustangs going to state in powerlifting

Sweetwater’s Sam Nemir and Ryan Linebaugh finished 1-2 in the 165-pound weight class Friday at the boys Region I, Division II powerlifting meet at Sundown High School.
In doing so, they both qualified for the state meet to be held in Abilene on March 26.
Nemir lifted a total of 1,145 pounds with a 440-pound squat, 260-pound bench press and 445-pound dead lift while Linebaugh had a 430-pound squat, 245-pound bench press and 445-pound dead lift.

Roscoe’s Hatcher is state alternate

Roscoe’s Corey Hatcher will be a state alternate after placing third in the 242-pound class at the boys Region I, Division III powerlifting meet at Sundown High School. Hatcher lifted 1,300 pounds with a 515-pound squat, 285-pound bench press and 500-pound dead lift. Roscoe’s Jose Rangel (985 pounds) was seventh in the 148-pound class while Landon Jones did not place in the 181-pound class.
