‘Stangs to visit Dogs in district opener

Things have soured the past two weeks for Sweetwater’s baseball team after a great start, but the one bright spot during its current slump came against Wylie in an 11-1 triumph.
Sweetwater (10-9-1) returns to Wylie for a rematch with the Bull-dogs at 4:30 p.m. today in the District 5-3A opener for both squads.
This has been an up-and-down year so far for the Mustangs, who got off to a 9-2-1 start only to drop seven of their last eight. Sweetwater ended its pre-district schedule by losing 6-0 to Class 2A Wall at Newman Park Friday.

Munoz places 8th at state

CORPUS CHRISTI — Sweetwater High School senior Bri Munoz placed eighth at the Class 3A state powerlifting meet Friday.
Munoz, competing in the 105-pound weight class, lifted a total of 570 pounds and had personal bests in all three categories in her first trip to the state meet. She had a 210-pound squat, 110-pound bench press and 250-pound dead lift.
Sweetwater’s other state competitor was also a sen-ior, Kelsey Painter, who was in the 132-pound weight class. Painter did not place, however, after she was disqualified in the squat. This was also the first state ap-pearance for Painter.

Powerlifters medal at regionals

Sweetwater High School sent several boys powerlifters to Sundown earlier this month to compete in the Region I, Division II meet and four of them medaled. They are, front row from left, Jay Lomas, fifth place in the 123-pound weight class; Ryan Linebaugh, second place in the 165-pound weight class; Sam Nemir, first place (regional champion) in the 165-pound weight class; and Mateo Gonzales, fifth place in the 242-pound weight class. By finishing in the top two in their class, Nemir and Linebaugh advance to compete in the state meet this Saturday in Abilene.

GP donates supplies to local schools

Each year, continued cuts in education budgets have forced teachers to spend hundreds of their own dollars just to keep their rooms stocked with essential classroom supplies, like tablets, tape, glue and markers.
This year, employees at Georgia-Pacific's Sweetwater gypsum plant are helping. They collected and donated boxes of school supplies to J.P. Cowen, Southeast Elementary, East Ridge Elementary and Highland ISD. In addition to the boxes of supplies given by employees, the company also donated cases of other needed products including its office paper, paper towels and tissue products.

Bibles distributed at Nolan Nursing

Nolan Nursing and Rehab welcomed the Gideons as they distributed 100 Bibles for each resident room. The Gideons have been in existence for over 100 years, and now is a worldwide organization that distributes Bibles in 190 different countries. Not only do the Bibles make their way to hotels, but also volunteers distribute them to schools, hospitals and nursing homes. The Bibles are now printed in 90 different languages. Gideon volunteer Jerry O'Briant reported that 78 million Bibles were distributed in 2009.

Hoops, Dreams and Goals set for this Friday

The first year West Texas Centers hosted Hoops, Dreams and Goals, no one expected it to become a yearly event.
But the wildly popular basketball tournament has become a tradition at West Texas Centers with no chance of it going away any time soon.
“I would say within the first hour, we were already talking about next year,” said Rodney Jones, West Texas Centers Chief Developmental Health Officer.
Hoops, Dreams and Goals is in its seventh year and still gaining steam.
And its no coincidence it coincides with the NCAA March Madness, West Texas Centers CEO Shelley Smith said.

Creed awarded at San Angelo stock show

Holy Mass of Christian Burial for Albert Gonzalez, Sr., 35, of Roscoe, will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at St. Albert’s Catholic Church in Roscoe with Father Michael Rodriguez officiating. Interment will follow at Roscoe Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Gonzalez died Sunday, March 20, 2011, in Sweetwater.

Jose E. Castillo, age 94, of Roscoe, passed away on Sunday, March 20, 2011, at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital. 
A Rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22, 2011, at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel. 
Holy Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 23, 2011, at St. Albert's Catholic Church with Rev. Michael Rodriguez officiating. Burial will follow at Roscoe Cemetery.    Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

Services for Rhonda J. “Stormi” Tatro, 59, of Abilene, have been scheduled for Saturday, March 19 at 2 p.m., First Baptist Church of Abilene, North 3rd & Orange. Rhonda was the daughter of the late Eugene and Ina Bailey of Kermit.
Arrangements have been entrusted to the family.
