A busy season for Big Country MRC

April 23, 2011

The Big Country Medical Reserve Corps unit participated in three major activities including patient transport for a nursing home that was moving to a facility, the assistance of a shelter 30 miles away in Colorado City due to widespread fires in the community during the month of February, and the assistance of a shelter in Roby due to the evacuation of Rotan during the wild fires in April.

Excel classes to begin at TSTC

Excel classes at Texas State Technical College in Sweetwater for the public have been scheduled!
Now is your chance to:
• Learn to create a budget;
• Organize information;
• Use calculations;
• Import information;
• Track expenses;
• Convert numbers to graphs and/or charts and more.
Each class will be one day per week, for one hour. Classes continue for six weeks and will be held in the computer lab at TSTC. Participants may choose either a lunchtime learning (noon to 1 p.m., beginning Tuesday, May 17), or early evening learning (5:30-6:30 p.m. beginning Wednesday, May 18).

George O. Sepeda
George O. Sepeda, 67, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away Friday, April 22, 2011, at 11:15 a.m. after a brief illness due to pancreatic cancer. He was surrounded by his wife, children and grandchildren.
A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 29, 2011 at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel, recited by Jim Petrie.

P.K. “Buster” Landers, 90, of Sweetwater, went home to his master on Friday, April 22, 2011, in Lubbock.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, April 25, 2011, at Highland Heights United Methodist Church with Rev. Chris Rodriguez and Rev. Jerry Koch officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home. Military graveside rites will be performed by the Nolan County Honor Guard.
Visitation will be held from 6-8 p.m. on Sunday, April 24, 2011, at McCoy Funeral Home.

Mary Alice Henington

Funeral services for Mary Alice Henington, 89, of Plainview, will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Monday, April 25, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Rev. Jim Reid and Rev. Gene Cannon officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Family visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, April 24, 2011, at McCoy Funeral Home.
Henington died Friday, April 22, 2011, in Lubbock.

Small acreage landowner’s series continues

SWEETWATER – The Texas AgriLife Extension Service office in Nolan County will conduct a four-part series of small-acreage landowner workshops.  
The second will be from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 26, in the Extension Meeting Room on the third floor of the Nolan County Courthouse in Sweetwater.
Other sessions are scheduled for Tuesday, May 10, and Tuesday, May 24, said Zachary Wilcox, AgriLife Extension agent in Nolan County.

Carrillo remains undefeated at UT

Kendal Carrillo, a former Sweetwater High School player, is still undefeated as a pitcher for the University of Texas baseball team after a win over Texas-Pan American Tuesday. Carrillo, a senior at UT, pitched a perfect eighth inning to get credit for the victory as the No. 7 Longhorns won 4-2. Carrillo, who is 3-0, has appeared in 20 games to share the team lead with a 1.25 ERA as a middle reliever, and batters are hitting just .195 against him this season.

Sweetwater’s JV baseball team defeated Big Spring’s JV, 10-6, in its final game Friday at Sportsman’s Park.
A triple by Anthony Pala-cios that drove in three runs was the big hit in a six-run first inning as Sweetwater never trailed in the contest.
The Mustangs also scored a run in the second inning and came up with its final three runs in the fourth to finish 4-4 in district play.
Five players finished with two hits — Palacios, Stephen May, Cole Maxwell, Brandon Howell and Joe Martinez. Howell was the winning pitcher.

Mustangs win their finale

BIG SPRING — After losing three straight games by at least seven runs, Sweetwater’s baseball team got a boost on Friday to end its 2011 season.
The Mustangs traveled to Big Spring and came back home with a 5-4 victory — its second over the Steers in District 5-3A play — as Sweetwater finished 2-6 in district and 12-16-1 overall under third-year coach Roland Herrera.
