Ludlum Measurements, Inc., a local manufacturer of radiation detection equipment, has experienced a significant increase in business due to the disaster in Japan, according to Mick Truitt, vice president of sales, marketing and business development.
Japan is still dealing with the results of the 8.9 magnitude earthquake and following tsunami. Not only are they working to clean up from that disaster, they also continue to deal with the resulting radiation leaks from the Fukushima nuclear plant, and thatâ€™s where Ludlumâ€™s comes into the picture.
The Nolan County Hospital District Board of Directors met for its regular meeting on Monday evening, April 25, 2011 at the Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital.
Newly appointed board member Jose Villafranca was sworn in at the meeting. Administering the oath of office to Villafranca was Board Chairman Carlos Alvarado.
During the meeting, two topics generated a great deal of discussion, the Phase Two portion of the Energy Services Project/Building Improvement Project, which consists of the renovation of the Medical Surgical Unit, and the proposed Hospitalist Program.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 33 calls for service, issued 11 citations and made two arrests on April 27, 2011.
The SPD received 23, 911 calls.

â€¢ Logan Glass, 22 â€” Driving while license invalid with previous conviction.
â€¢ Julie Aguilar, 38 â€” Warrant.
The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 12 calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on April 27, 2011.

â€¢ Malaki Owusu Bender, 40 of Sweetwater â€” Warrant/parole violation and family violence assault causes bodily injury.
The Sweetwater Stam-pede, an Arena League foot-ball team of fourth and fifth graders, defeated Abileneâ€™s Jets 41-6 this past weekend and have a second-round playoff game at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at the Abilene Expo Center against the Abilene Chargers.
The winner plays either Abileneâ€™s Cowboys or the Jim Ned Indians for the championship at 1:30 p.m.
The public is encouraged to come watch as the Stam-pede (8-0), which has given up just 48 points all season, goes for the title. The team is coached by Sammy Alva-rez Jr., Joe Hall, Randy Melendez, Roger Rudel and Matt Figueroa.
Sweetwater will host its second annual GreenFest at the Nolan County Courthouse Square on Saturday, April 30, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.Â The event will feature live music, food, family activities, new energy innovations, electric and hybrid vehicles, large wind energy parts, international films about Sweetwater and Nolan County, and more.Â TXU Energy and Altezza Global are the GreenFest sponsors along with the Mayorâ€™s Youth Task Force and the Texas Wind Energy Clearinghouse.Â
On Monday afternoon, April 4, 2011, between 4:45 and 5 p.m., on the 900 block of E. 16th Street, Chris Spaulding stated that he and his son, Corbyn Spaulding were unloading groceries from the vehicle and bringing them into the house. Mr. Spaulding was just entering into the kitchen area with an arm full of groceries, when he heard a sound outside that sounded like a gun shot. When Mr. Spaulding rushed out side the front door he noticed his son holding his right abdominal side area. Spaulding stated that Corbyn, his son, told him that he felt like he got stung by a wasp.
