Two alumni football games slated Saturday

April 22, 2011

Most former high school football players think they will never play again. However, Texas Alumni Football is changing that, with not one but two alumni football games on Saturday at Mustang Bowl.
It will be Roby vs. Roscoe in the opener of the doubleheader at 4 p.m. That game is followed by Sweetwater vs. Snyder in the nightcap starting at 7:30 p.m.
Texas Alumni Football is also responsible for two other Abilene-area games on Saturday. Aspermont plays Hermleigh on Aspermont's field at 2 p.m., and Stamford squares off with Haskell at Stamford's Bulldog Stadium at 7:30 p.m.

Guns -N- Hoses event planned

April 22, 2011

On Thursday, April 28, 2010, the Sweetwater Fire Department and the Sweetwater Police Department will be "fighting" it out for a good cause. They will be having the third Guns and Hoses Basketball Game, benefiting the West Texas Children's Advocacy Center. The game will be at the Sweetwater High School Gym at 7 p.m. and the teams will compete to see who wins this year's game. Last year's winners were the police officers and the first year's winners were the firemen. According to Sweetwater Police Officer Lance Richburg, they are hoping that many will come out to support the cause once again.

Two teams who haven’t had much go right for them since the start of district play — Sweetwater and Big Spring — wrap up their seasons at 7 p.m. today in Big Spring with little more than pride at stake.
Sweetwater brings a 1-6 record into today’s finale, but the win came over Big Spring, which has yet to claim a victory in its seven district games.

SW’s Mercer going to state

April 22, 2011

LUBBOCK — After failing to make it to state in his two previous oppor-tunities, the third time was finally a charm for Sweetwater’s Ryan Mercer at the Region I-3A golf tournament.
On Thursday, Mercer claimed a state berth as he shot 75 for a 147 total, finishing second among all medalists — just three behind Hunter Wade of Perryton — but with the best two-day score of any medalist not on one of the top two teams.
This year’s Class 3A boys state tournament will be held May 12-13 at Austin’s Roy Kizer Golf Course.
