Blackwell sends trio to area meet

April 22, 2011

Blackwell had three ath-letes who recently qualified for the area track meet held in Trent.
They were Mason Mag-ness in the boys pole vault, Mark Monroe in the boys 110 hurdles and Kaitlyn Gaston in the girls long jump and 100 dash.
However, none of the three athletes was able to advance to the regional track meet, which is scheduled for May 2-3 at Abilene Christian University.

Sweetwater represented at network luncheon

Sweetwater was well represented at a network luncheon in Roscoe on April 13. Attendees included Tim Fambrough, Greg Wortham, Jim McKenzie, Jerod Peek, Eddie Brown, Terrie Blankenship, Jacque McCoy, Ken Becker, Kirstin Smith, Kirby Andrews, Rodney Foster and Carolyn Lawrence.
Roscoe community leaders hosted one of five network luncheons sponsored by Texas Midwest Community Network this spring. The luncheon was held at the Roscoe Community Center.  Immediately following lunch, discussion focused on “Effective Local Efforts”.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 40 calls for service, issued two citations and made four arrests on April 19, 2011.

The SPD received 13, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 200 block of E. Arizona.
• Burglary of building — 500 block of Lamar.
Arrested by SPD:
• Aaron Treviño, 21 — Warrants.
• Justin Tollison, 19 — Warrants.
• Arturo Treviño, 52 — Public intoxication.
• Stephen Getty, 55 — Public intoxication.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had six calls for service, served five civil papers and made no arrests on April 19, 2011.

Lori Lynn McKenzie

JOSHUA — Lori Lynn McKenzie, 36, of Joshua, an Ellis County deputy sheriff, left this life to be with the Lord on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, in Fort Worth.
Memorial service will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, April 22, 2011, at First United Methodist Church in Joshua.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Ellis County Sheriff Officer’s Association or First United Methodist Church of Joshua Food Pantry.

Mercer one shot back at regionals

Ryan Mercer of Sweetwa-ter is a single shot out of the lead at the Region I-3A golf tournament in Lubbock after the first round of play.
Mercer shot 72 Wednes-day at Meadowbrook Can-yon Course and trails only Perryton’s Hunter Wade. The tournament wraps up today and if Mercer puts together another solid round, he has a chance to advance to the Class 3A state tournament in Austin that is set for May 12-13.
This is Mercer’s third straight trip to regionals. The top two teams and the top two individuals not on a qualifying team advance to the state tournament.

Highland JV tennis, JH track squads compete at district

Highland’s Ron Covington and Ethan Wilson teamed up to place fourth in JV boys doubles at the district tennis tournament.
After a first-round bye, they lost to Enriquez-McEl-rath of Santa Anna 8-0 before falling to Lopez-Sor-rells of Hermleigh, 8-5, in the third-place match.

Indictments given for drug ring, stabbing

The Nolan County Grand Jury handed down 10 indictments on Tuesday , April 19, 2011, with eight of those indictments sealed. One of those indictments stemmed from a crack cocaine distribution house being busted in Sweetwater on Oct. 6, 2010.
Indicted for engaging in organized criminal activity was Robert Larry Williams. The offense is classified as a first degree felony, enhanced with two prior convictions, which could get him 25 years to life in prison. His bond was set at $25,000.
Williams' prior convictions included forgery in 1985 and aggravated assault in 1991.

Winners announced at Spring Fling

The first annual Spring Fling Coloring Contest and Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest was held in downtown Roscoe at the Roscoe Emporium on April 16. Local students turned in coloring sheets prior to the contest and created sidewalk chalk art for the day's art contest. Winners of the contest are shown above including Temy Teel, John Robert O'Callaghan, Rhonda Stratton, Joseph Collins, Gabriel Alcala, Celinda Alcala, Kristina Rando, K'Den Stone, Larkyn O'Callaghan, Adison Torres and Alison Torres. Not shown are other winners, Hoyt Mulanax, Luke Wilson and Jake Wilson.

Confederate history on display at library

Mike Briggs will have a special history display at the County-City Library during the month of April which is Confederate History Month. He will be displaying the history of Texas as a Confederate state. The display will be set up on the bulletin board in the front of the library. The hours for the library are Monday from 1-6 p.m., Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

• Bennie Walker, 47 — Warrants.
