Morris L. “Coon” McDonald

Morris L. (Coon) McDonald, age 81, of Trent, Texas passed away on Tuesday, April 19, 2011, at his son's residence. 
Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. on Friday, April 22, 2011, at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Eric Von Atzigen officiating. Burial will follow at Nolan Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.

SHS teams are in spoiler role at Snyder

Although one of them is still alive in the chase for the No. 3 playoff spot in District 5-3A, the Sweet-water High School base-ball and softball teams will both go to Snyder today as underdogs.

Lady Stangs in 6th place at regionals

LUBBOCK — The Sweet-water girls golf team enters today’s final round of the Region I-3A tournament at Lubbock’s Meadowbrook Golf Course in sixth place after shooting a 375 in Mon-day’s opening round.
Jodie May shot 91 to pace Sweetwater’s effort while Katie High shot 93, Sarah Witt 94, Elise Lawrence 97 and Alex Gomez 99.
Andrews (328) currently leads the team standings by two shots over Snyder, with Burkburnett two more shots back at 332. Pecos is fourth with a 344 total and Monahans (349) is in cur-rently in fifth place.

Local resident catches ShareLunker Program fish

Faron McCain of Sweetwater, Texas caught a 14.94 pound largemouth bass on April 14, 2011 at Lake O.H. Ivie. The Texas Parks and Wildlife ShareLunker Program was dispatched to the Concho Park Marina to document and transport the bass to their hatchery in Athens, Tx.
McCain’s fish was the third largest ShareLunker Program fish of the year, which runs from October 1 through April 30. Sean Swank of De Berry, Tx has the largest bass, weighing in at 16.07 pounds, caught in Caddo Lake.

Local family wins ski resort’s cardboard derby

On Saturday, March 19, in Sipapu, New Mexico the Sipapu Ski Resort held its Annual Cardboard Derby. The Cardboard Derby gets bigger and better every year. This year’s event the Team Division was won by The West Texas Wind Runners consisting of team members Chris Hamlin, James Hamlin and Rusty Goates, all of Sweetwater.

Holy Mass of Christian Burial for Jessie G. Gomez, 75, of Sweetwater will be held on Wednesday, April 20, 2011 at 10 a.m. at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church. Officiating will be Father Michael Rodriguez. Interment is at Loraine Cemetery, under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater. Rosary will be on Tuesday, April 19, 2011 at 7 p.m. at McCoy Chapel of Memories. The rosary will be recited by Pauline Gauna and Connie Palacios.
Mr. Gomez died Saturday, April 16, 2011, at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene.

Joseph Edward Mikac

Joseph Edward Mikac, age 67, of Birch Run, MI, died Thursday, April 14, 2011, at Regency Hospital Of Odessa. He was born in West, TX on April 24, 1943, to the late Henry John Mikac and Irene Vera (Churchman) Mikac. 
No services are scheduled at this time.  Arrangements are entrusted to Acres West Funeral Chapel of Odessa.

Mr. Ramirez died Sunday, April 17, 2011, in Sweetwater.
