Eleven people were involved in a wreck on Interstate 20 east bound on Saturday around noon just West of the TA Travel Center truck stop. A white Yukon containing seven passengers and a Maxima containing four passengers collided when â according to passengers in the SUV â the Maxima came into their lane, causing the crash. Nine passengers were transported to nearby hospitals, one being flown to Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. According to Sweetwater Emergency Services Manger Grant Madden, the SUV flipped one to two times and the Maxima rolled over.
Alice Velez from the Diabetic Outreach Program at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital will be at the health department on Thursday, May 19, from 8:30 a.m. until noon to check blood glucose (sugar) and answer any questions anyone may have regarding diabetes. Pamphlets and materials will be available.
Governor Rick Perry has proclaimed May as Elder Abuse Prevention Month. This month, Adult Protective Services' (APS) is reminding all Texans to do their part in the battle against abuse, neglect, and exploitation of the elderly and adults with disabilities.
âIf you suspect that an elderly or disabled adult is being abused or neglected, please report it immediately,â said Beth Engelking, DFPS assistant commissioner for Adult Protective Services. âProtecting vulnerable adults is everyoneâs business."
Residents, staff and guests enjoyed Cinco de Mayo festivities last week at Nolan Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Those attending enjoyed Mexican snacks, drinks, music and Mexican dancing by Aida Pantoja.
Two Taylor Electric Cooperative employees are being called heroes after they pulled two women from a burning vehicle Monday afternoon. It happened on County Road 196 near the town of Nolan around 1 p.m. According to Sweetwater's Fire Chief, Grant Madden, two women were trapped in their car after an accident when it caught fire. The fire was said to be caused by the women trying to get out of the loose dirt and tires spinning on the dirt.
Sweetwater firefighters extinguished flames from a burning vehicle Wednesday on Highway 70 in Nolan County. The cause of the blaze in unknown, according to Sweetwater Fire Chief Grant Madden.
Mateo Caballero went to be with the lord on May 10, 2011 at 4 a.m. at Hendrick Medical Center in Abilene. He was surrounded at his bed side by his daughters, Rosa, Sylvia, Margie, Mickey, Matilda and granddaughter, Sandy.
Mateo Caballero was born in Kennedy, Texas on March 11, 1923. He was 88 years old. He lived a happy life in Sweetwater for 44 years. He was a loving and wonderful husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He was a member of Highland Baptist Church. He married Maria Limones on Sept. 5, 1942 in Violet, Texas.
A memorial service for Tony Wayne Fisher, 42, of Sweetwater, will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 14, 2011, at Word of God Church in Sweetwater with Rev. Dale Stowe officiating.
Fisher died Monday, May 9, 2011, at Nolan Nursing and Rehab.
Thomas Mirron Sanders, age 76, passed away Sunday, May 8, 2011 in Monahans, TX. He was born May 9, 1934 in Hermleigh, TX; to William and Marietta (George) Sanders.
Thomas was a member of the Church of God in Kermit, TX and loved to fish.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 212 calls for service, issued 13 citations and made nine arrests from May 5-8, 2011.
