A new, local organization is hoping to bridge the gap in community leadership.
The Young Leaders of Sweetwater (YLS) met for a noontime meeting on Monday, May 9, 2011 at the Chamber of Commerce. The 40 and under group met to discuss their Open House slated for June 7 at First Baptist Church to be held on the 3rd floor of the Education Building.
Caleb Thompson might have some physical and neurological limitations, but in his 16 years of life, Caleb and the Thompson family have made a strong, statewide impact to improve the lives of the blind and deaf community.
Caleb is blind, deaf and lives his life as a quadriplegic. At the age of three, he was diagnosed with leukemia, and brain damage came as a result of the treatment. However, age knows no limits in the Thompson family, as Caleb has been going before the legislature in Austin since he was 5.
A sneak peek into the upcoming episode of NBC's "The Voice" for Tuesday, May 17 features Sweetwater native Tje Austin competing in an elimination bout.
Following the blind auditions of Round 1, Tje will be taking on Austin-based competitor Nakia, a 36-year-old who might not look the part but certainly sounds it. According to The Voice's website, "Nakia draws strength from his extended family and inspiration from the memory of his father. Until he passed away in 2009, Nakia's dad encouraged him to follow his dreams."
Sweetwater Regional Federal Credit Union held an open house at their business all day on Friday, May 13, 2011 and held a drawing at 4 p.m. that day. Winners of Schlitterbahn tickets were Damian Loza and Lupe Acosta. The tickets were donated by KXOX Radio. Aurelio Leyba was the grand prize winner of an XBOX 360. When it comes to the latest medical technology and equipment, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) continues to provide Nolan County much of the same capabilities as larger hospitals in Abilene and the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.
Donna Boatright has announced RPMH has installed a new Doppler echocardiogram and vascular ultrasound system that helps doctors examine the organs of patients without ionizing radiation (as used in x-rays).
On Sunday, May 1, 2011, 64 students from Sweetwater Middle School were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. The formal induction ceremony was held at the First Presbyterian Church in Sweetwater. Current NJHS officers for 2010-2011 participated in the ceremony and were recognized for their service. Guest speakers for the event were Mr. Jeff Withrow, Principal and Mrs. Danette Price, Assistant Principal of Sweetwater Middle School.
Ten years ago, Relay for Life was started by Janis McDowell in Sweetwater to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society. June 2002 was the first Relay event and through it, the Sweetwater community raised $23,000. This year, Relay for Life will begin Friday, June 3, at 6 p.m. and end Saturday, June 4, at 6 a.m.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 47 calls for service, issued five citations and made four arrests on May 11, 2011.

AUSTIN â€” Ryan Mercer of Sweetwater shot a 2-over 73 on Thursday to enter todayâ€™s final round in a tie for fourth place in the boys individual stand-ings at the Class 3A state boys golf tournament.
Mercer, a junior who is making his first state appearance, trails first-round leader Sean Romero of Texarkana Pleasant Grove by just two strokes. He was scheduled to tee off for his final round at 8:10 a.m. today.
Mercer began his first round on the 17th hole as part of a shotgun start after a six-hour rain delay.
