The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 54 calls for service, issued 13 citations and made no arrests on May 19, 2011.

The SPD received 17, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — Lakewood.
• Assault — 1600 block of Elm.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had five calls for service, served six civil papers and made two arrests on May 19, 2011.

Arrested by NCSO:
• Ramon Teran Vasquez, Jr., 45 of San Angelo — Warrant/surety withdrawal.

Calls for service:
• Vehicle accident — South Highway 70/CR 236.
• Reckless driver — I-20 MM 247 east bound.

Roscoe athletes receive honors at their annual sports banquet

Roscoe Collegiate recog-nized its 2010-11 athletes at the school’s sports banquet on Friday. Athletes in football, cross country, basketball, track and powerlifting were recognized, including those receiving all-district, all-area or all-state honors in their sport this past year. The athletes who received special awards at this year’s banquet, held at the school cafetorium, are pictured.
Serving as guest speaker for the sports banquet was Jason Johns, who is defensive coordinator for the Abilene Christian University football program.

Basketball camps here on June 6-9

Two basketball camps, one each for local boys and girls, will be held in Sweetwater on June 6-9.
A Mustang Basket-ball Camp will be held at the high school gym and has two sessions. The registration deadline is Tuesday, May 31. Students completing grades 3-5 will attend from 9-11 a.m. each day, while grades 6-8 will attend from 1-3 p.m. The fee is $30. Each camper must sign a release form and show proof of insurance. Participants will re-ceive a camp T-shirt and basketball. Water will be provided, but campers may bring a sports drink.

Ronald Wayne Bell

Ronald Wayne Bell, age 65, of Blackwell, Texas passed away on Friday, May 20, 2011 at his residence. 
His body will be cremated. No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home. 
Ronald was born Dec. 29, 1945 in Lamesa, Texas to James Charley and Myrldean Richards Bell. He worked as an industrial electrician for many years before retiring. 

City receives budget award

Chicago--The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) announced that the City of Sweetwater, Texas has received the GFOA's Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for its budget.

Mercer honored with resolution

Ryan Mercer was commended for qualifying for state competition in boys’ golf. Pictured (from L to R) are SHS Boys’ Golf Coach Steve Mercer, Candy Mercer, state qualifier Ryan Mercer and SHS Athletic Director Craig Slaughter. Three other SHS students were recognized at the Sweetwater ISD School Board Meeting with resolutions honoring them for their state qualifying accomplishments. Though not in attendance, SHS girls’ track member Jayci Shelton was honored for her accomplishment in qualifying for state competition.

Meneses sworn in as new SISD Board Trustee

The Sweetwater Independent School District (SISD) Board of Trustees met for its regular session meeting on Monday evening, May 16 at Sweetwater High School (SHS) in "The Hub" conference room.
Several presentations were made to open the meeting, including a variety of resolutions, a robotic demonstration and the recognition of a departing board member.
