Note: Because it is an ongoing investigation and trial and due to the fact that information has been presented before a Grand Jury, the Sweetwater Reporter could not receive verification on the situation from the local law enforcement entities that are involved in the matter. The following is an account from the perspective of the mother of the victim.
Following the city elections on May 14, a run-off will be taking place in Roscoe on June 11, 2011.
The race for Place 3 Councilmember was too close to call in the city, prompting the second election. Virg Pruitt and Don Graham will be on the ballot for the open seat.
Voting will take place on Saturday, June 11, 2011 from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at City Hall in Roscoe, located at 115 Cypress.
Early voting by personal appearance will also be held at City Hall each weekday starting on Tuesday, May 31 until Tuesday, June 7 between the hours of 8:30 a.m. through 4:30 p.m.
The Sweetwater High School (SHS) held its induction for the National Honor Society (NHS) on Monday, May 23, 2011. The new NHS officers are Carly Johnson, President; Gabriel Medellin, Vice President; Leah Armstrong, Secretary; Ryan Mercer, Treasurer; and Alicia Finn, Historian. The NHS Student Advisory Committee will consist of Shelby Ezzell, Ashley Stevenson and Emily Richardson. The new NHS Officers and Student Advisory Committee are shown (in no particular order) with departing NHS officers Jace Bentle, Kelsey Jones, Kaitlen Harrison and Briana MuĂ±oz.
The Third Annual df Ranch Triathlon will take place on Sunday, June 5, from the Lake Sweetwater public boat ramp starting at 8:30 a.m. The triathlon will consist of a 500m swim, 14 mile bike and a 5k run. This year there is a new addition to the race. It is labeled the Land Lovers division. This accommodates athletes who don't want to swim. A designated swimmer will complete the swim for them, and then, the athlete will take off from transition and complete the race on the bike and the run side by side with the rest of the triathletes.

Several Sweetwater High School students received National Professional Certification in Customer Service by passing an industry-driven assessment. This new professional certification is based on national skill standards recognized by high performance employers from the retail, wholesale, personal services and real estate industries as critical to customer service success. The computer-based assessment required these certified individuals to respond to real-world job-related situations, using knowledge and skills widely recognized as important in high-performance workplaces.
The SHS Choir who performed at the Winspear Opera House Choir Festival in Dallas brought home two choral trophies for their performance. All three judges awarded the choir their first trophy for an "Outstanding Choral Performance" in the Choir Festival. The judges also gave the SHS Choir a total score that awarded them the second trophy for being "Runner Up in the Best of Class" for their performance scores.
Senior Airman Janell Lopez, daughter of Joanna and Mark Wofford of Sweetwater, flew in the fighter plane belonging to U.S. Forces Garrison Command 643rd Regional Support Group, Kandahar, Afghanistan. She is a Certified Taser Instructor and was awarded Airman of the Month during her Kandahar, Afghanistan deployment. She also received the CLS (Combat Lifesaver) Certified Most Outstanding Instructor Award for Security Forces and the Tuskegee Airman award while deployed in Iraq. She was awarded the Elizabeth N. Jacobson Award. She was hand selected of 170 students, Coined for Excellence by Col.
Manuela Villa DeLaCruz
Holy Mass of Christian Burial for Manuela Villa DeLaCruz, 85, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, May 30, 2011, at Holy Family Catholic Church with Father Michael Rodriguez officiating. Interment will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
A rosary will be held at 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 29, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories, recited by Pauline Gauna and Connie Palacios.
Mike Welch, a Sweetwater native who during his high school days helped lead the Mustangs to their only state football title in school history in 1985 and later starred at Baylor University, was inducted recently into the Big Country Athletic Hall of Fame along with nine others during a banquet ceremony that was held at the Abilene Civic Center.
