Mercer is all-state after 5th place finish

AUSTIN — Ryan Mercer of Sweetwater became the third member of his family to win all-state honors after completing his final round with a 149 total on Friday at the Class 3A boys golf tournament.

Lady Mustang Camp set

A Lady Mustang Bas-ketball Camp for students completing grades 1-7 will be held June 6-9 at the Sweetwater Middle School gym.
Times for the camp are from 9-11:30 a.m. all four days. The cost will be $35 and pre-registration is greatly appreciated. A concession stand will be available. The goal of the camp is to improve players’ skills in basketball through instruction in individual skills and fun team competitions.

All-district softball — SW has three on 1st team

Three Sweetwater players have been named to the all-District 5-3A softball team announced recently, while three others made the second team and one player received all-district honorable mention.
Junior infielder Alicia Finn was a first-team selec-tion for the second consecutive year. Joining her on the first team were senior pitcher Taylor McKoy and sophomore outfielder Kendra Crosson.

Local young leaders group formed

A new, local organization is hoping to bridge the gap in community leadership.
The Young Leaders of Sweetwater (YLS) met for a noontime meeting on Monday, May 9, 2011 at the Chamber of Commerce. The 40 and under group met to discuss their Open House slated for June 7 at First Baptist Church to be held on the 3rd floor of the Education Building.

Thompsons fight for DARS funding

Caleb Thompson might have some physical and neurological limitations, but in his 16 years of life, Caleb and the Thompson family have made a strong, statewide impact to improve the lives of the blind and deaf community.
Caleb is blind, deaf and lives his life as a quadriplegic. At the age of three, he was diagnosed with leukemia, and brain damage came as a result of the treatment. However, age knows no limits in the Thompson family, as Caleb has been going before the legislature in Austin since he was 5.

Tje to compete in battle round

A sneak peek into the upcoming episode of NBC's "The Voice" for Tuesday, May 17 features Sweetwater native Tje Austin competing in an elimination bout.
Following the blind auditions of Round 1, Tje will be taking on Austin-based competitor Nakia, a 36-year-old who might not look the part but certainly sounds it. According to The Voice's website, "Nakia draws strength from his extended family and inspiration from the memory of his father. Until he passed away in 2009, Nakia's dad encouraged him to follow his dreams."

SRFCU holds open house, drawing

Sweetwater Regional Federal Credit Union held an open house at their business all day on Friday, May 13, 2011 and held a drawing at 4 p.m. that day. Winners of Schlitterbahn tickets were Damian Loza and Lupe Acosta. The tickets were donated by KXOX Radio. Aurelio Leyba was the grand prize winner of an XBOX 360. RPMH acquires new ultrasound equipment

When it comes to the latest medical technology and equipment, Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH) continues to provide Nolan County much of the same capabilities as larger hospitals in Abilene and the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.
Donna Boatright has announced RPMH has installed a new Doppler echocardiogram and vascular ultrasound system that helps doctors examine the organs of patients without ionizing radiation (as used in x-rays).

NJHS inducts new members

On Sunday, May 1, 2011, 64 students from Sweetwater Middle School were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society. The formal induction ceremony was held at the First Presbyterian Church in Sweetwater. Current NJHS officers for 2010-2011 participated in the ceremony and were recognized for their service. Guest speakers for the event were Mr. Jeff Withrow, Principal and Mrs. Danette Price, Assistant Principal of Sweetwater Middle School.
