May 13th
Ten years ago, Relay for Life was started by Janis McDowell in Sweetwater to raise funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society. June 2002 was the first Relay event and through it, the Sweetwater community raised $23,000. This year, Relay for Life will begin Friday, June 3, at 6 p.m. and end Saturday, June 4, at 6 a.m.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 47 calls for service, issued five citations and made four arrests on May 11, 2011.
The SPD received 56, 911 calls.
Calls for service:
• Theft — 1100 block of Oak.
• Criminal mischief — 600 block of W. Alabama.
• Family violence assault — 1700 block of Hailey.
• Unattended death — 1300 block of Circle Drive.
Arrested by SPD:
• Roy Jennings, 41 — Warrants.
• Jason Blackledge, 31 — Theft/Possession of marijuana.
• Ricky Ellerbe, 31 — Theft.
• Jerry Meeks, 49 — Criminal trespass/theft.

AUSTIN — Ryan Mercer of Sweetwater shot a 2-over 73 on Thursday to enter today’s final round in a tie for fourth place in the boys individual stand-ings at the Class 3A state boys golf tournament.
Mercer, a junior who is making his first state appearance, trails first-round leader Sean Romero of Texarkana Pleasant Grove by just two strokes. He was scheduled to tee off for his final round at 8:10 a.m. today.
Mercer began his first round on the 17th hole as part of a shotgun start after a six-hour rain delay.
May 12th
Roscoe High School student, Kaitlinn Reed was presented the Floyd L. Smith Memorial Scholarship check from the Sweetwater Police Patrol Association. Kaitlinn is going to be studying Dental Hygiene. She is shown with Sweetwater police officers Lance Richburg, Melinda Moncada, Sam Cunningham, Rob Hohman and Kurt Huckabee.
Walkers (and joggers) will go around the clock in the battle against cancer during the American Cancer Society Relay for Life of Nolan County.
Teams of Nolan County residents will gather at the Sweetwater High School track on June 3, 2011, for an overnight relay against cancer. Relay for Life is a family-oriented team event where participants can walk relay-style around the track and take part in fun activities off the track. Teams can include coworkers, club members, family and friends who have gathered donations prior to the event.
A brief meeting was held by the Nolan County Commissioners' Court on Monday morning, May 9, 2011 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
The commissioners met to consider the approval of removing the burn ban for the county, yet made the decision to keep the burn ban in place for the next two weeks.
The minutes from the April 25 meeting were approved as well, and a few reports were received from some of the county department heads. The reports came from the Nolan County Clerk and the Sheriff's Office.
