Currently, the Texas Forest Service is assisting local crews put out a handful of fires: two of the more noticeable are in Nolan County near Maryneal and Taylor County near Trent.

SISD terminates 14 due to budget cuts

The Sweetwater Independent School District (SISD) Board of Trustees met for its regular monthly meeting on Monday evening, June 20, 2011 at the Administration Building.
On the consent agenda, the board approved the minutes from the meeting held on May 16, the financial statements and bills from the previous month and the investment statement. Approval was also given to accept one of the three delinquent tax lot bids received by the board; the other two were denied as they did not meet the minimum requirement.

Morgan RE welcomes new realtor

Morgan Real Estate recently welcomed a new realtor to their company, Amanda Morrow, who moved to Sweetwater with her family about two and a half years ago, after being born and raised in Big Spring.
Morrow has had an interest in real estate for over six years, even during the time she was a stay-at-home mother. Morrow finished her final real estate course in March of 2011, through on line courses at Texas A&M University.
Morrow loves residing in Sweetwater, and enjoys raising her family here.

Wanda Straley

Wanda Straley, 65, of Sweetwater, passed away at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital on Thursday, June 23, 2011. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 27, 2011, at McCoy Chapel of Memories with Kevin Shipp and Richard Ferguson officiating. Interment will follow in the Loraine Cemetery beside her husband, directed by McCoy Funeral Home.
There will be a family visitation Sunday evening, June 26, from 6-8 p.m. at McCoy Funeral Home.

Grace Willoughby Henson

Grace Willoughby Henson, age 90 of Sweetwater, Texas went to see the Lord, Wednesday, June 22, 2011. Grace was born to the late James L. and Laura G. Willoughby, on April 9, 1921 in Roswell, New Mexico.
A visitation will be held from 4-6 p.m. on Sunday, June 26, 2011, at McCoy Funeral Home. Services will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, June 27, 2011, at Broadway Baptist Church, with Rev. Chris Stephens and Rev. James Baker officiating. Graveside rites will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. McCoy Funeral Home of Sweetwater is in charge of arrangements.

Elizabeth Fay Ballard

Sweetwater — Elizabeth Fay Ballard, 83, died Tuesday, June 21, 2011, in a local nursing center. Graveside services will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, June 24t, at the Trent Cemetery with Reverend Ronnie Freeman officiating, directed by Starbuck Funeral Home of Merkel.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 43 calls for service, issued one citation and made one arrest on June 21, 2011.

The SPD received 35, 911 calls.

• Cristino Alvo, 25 — Driving while license invalid.

RETRACTION
A retraction has been issued by the Nolan County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO) for the Wednesday, June 15, 2011 arrest of Jose Salamanca Solis, 34, of Roscoe for driving while intoxicated.

The Nolan County Sheriff's Office (NCSO) had 10 calls for service, served no civil papers and made two arrests on June 21, 2011.

10-under all-stars are state champs

The Sweetwater 10-under all-star softball team recently competed in a Texas ASA State C tournament at Wichita Falls and went undefeated as it brought home the state championship. The team’s members are, back row from left, Kaci Webb, Alicia Gomez, Alexe Alcala, Alyssa Herrera, Texas Williams; front row, Kara Lehnert, Kenley Reed, Cyera Pieper, Aubri Espinoza, Maddie Hicks and Emerald Torres. Four SW teams to play in all-star tournaments

Four Sweetwater Little League baseball teams will compete starting Monday in District 5 double elimination all-star tournaments that will run through the first week of July.
Sweetwater’s 10-11 year-olds host their tournament at the Major League field. Also in the tournament are Merkel, Snyder, Clyde, Wylie and Abilene Southern. Sweetwater plays its first game at 6 p.m. Monday against Snyder. The tour-nament will wrap up with the championship game on July 4, with a second championship game to be played on July 5 if necessary.
