Father of abandoned, cactus-scarred boy arrested

SAN ANGELO, Texas — A four-year-old boy covered in cactus spines was found in the middle of I-20 near Sweetwater this morning, police said.
The boy's father, Carlos Rico, is in jail in Saginaw, where he has been charged with endangering a child for allegedly abandoning his child, Angel, said Sweetwater Police Chief Jim Kelley.

Four-year-old boy found on I-20

A four-year-old boy named Angel was found on Interstate 20 this morning near the East Interchange by Sweetwater residents on their way to Abilene, according to Sweetwater Chief of Police Jim Kelley. The boy, who is Hispanic, was found around 6:30 a.m. with "possibly hundreds" of cactus spines in him. "He is in good shape, is very bright and sociable," said Kelley.
Kelley stated that Child Protective Services are now involved and the Amber Alert organization and the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children have been contacted, as well as many other law enforcement entities.

Disaster declaration extended

The Nolan County Commissioners Court held its regular meeting on Monday morning, June 27 at the Nolan County Courthouse.
As approval must take place on a weekly basis, approval was once again given to extend the disaster declaration for Nolan County along with the order prohibiting outdoor burning for one week.

Hailey Dunn: Six months later

For the last six months, the Hailey Dunn saga has plagued the west Texas town of Colorado City.
Sordid details have emerged about her mother's personal life and family's legal troubles, but a half-year later, what happened to Hailey still remains a mystery.
"I'm still hanging onto hope. There's no reason why I can't be hopeful," said Hailey's mother, Billie Dunn at a vigil for her daughter on Saturday.
Dunn recently moved to south Texas after she said she couldn't handle speculation from the community about her role in Hailey's disappearance.

SW all-star teams start out with wins

Sweetwater went 2-0 on Monday to begin District 5 Little League all-star tour-nament play and advance to the second round.
Sweetwater’s 10-11 year-olds, who are hosting their tournament at the Major League field, got off to a rousing start by crushing Snyder’s all-stars 22-0. The team plays again at 6 p.m. today against Merkel, where another victory will advance Sweetwater into the tourna-ment semifinals on Friday.
All of the District 5 tournaments are double-elimination. If the 10-11-year-olds lose today, they must beat Clyde at 8 p.m. in the losers bracket on Thursday to stay alive.

Lawrence appointed TSTC President
