Prayer vigil planned for Hailey Dunn

A prayer vigil has been scheduled for to mark six months since 13-year-old Hailey Dunn vanished from her home in the small town of Colorado City.
The community will gather at 9 p.m. Saturday, June 25 at Colorado City's Ruddick Park to pray for the girl's safe return.
A large vigil was held to mark the three month anniversary of Hailey's disappearance. Her father, Clint Dunn, appeared at that vigil. It's unclear if he'll make it to this event. Hailey's mother, Billie Dunn, has since moved to Travis County.

Grand Jury indicts eight

The Nolan County Grand Jury handed down eight indictments this week in the 32nd Judicial District Court. Five of those indictments were sealed. The following cases were true-billed:
• Joe Michael Noriega was indicted for continuous violence against the family, a third degree felony. His bond was set at $15,000.
• Loraine Danielle Brown was indicted for prohibited substance in a correctional facility, a third degree felony. Court documents state that Brown possessed marijuana in the Nolan County Jail. Her bond was set at $7,500.

Fire now 75 percent contained

According to the Texas Forest Service, the White Hat fire in Nolan and Coke Counties is now 75 percent contained and has burned 71,200 acres of land. The Trent Mesa fire is also still burning and is about 50 percent contained with 600 acres of land now burned. Firefighters continue to battle the blazes. Texas Forest Service currently is responding to 15 large fires that have burned 163,829 acres. Critical fire weather conditions are expected today across portions of the West and Northwest branches and elevated fire conditions from the Big Country to the Edwards Plateau.

Communities come together during disaster

As of this past Sunday, Maryneal resident and Big Country Medical Reserve Corps member Carol Higdon says that she started to collect her important belongings, as well as help her sister on Monday pack her items in boxes in case they would have to evacuate.
Later Monday, Higdon proceeded to help arrange a location for all local Maryneal residents as well as firefighters and volunteers. The first location was at the Highland School.
Then Tuesday they were able to move over to the Community Center of Maryneal, since the smoke was not as strong as to compared to Monday.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 46 calls for service, issued two citations and made four arrests on June 22, 2011.

The SPD received 33, 911 calls.

Accidents:
• 1900 block of Lamar.
• 100 block of Ragland.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a habitation — 1500 block of Vards Lane.

Arrested by SPD:
• Christina Juarez, 21 — Assault.
• Chrystal Palafox, 21 — Theft.
• Jerry Washington, 26 — Warrant.
• Chad Parsons, 17 — Driving under the influence of alcohol.

Richard “Dick” J. Donnelly

Richard “Dick” J. Donnelly, father, brother and friend, died June 8, 2011 at the age of 58. A U.S Navy veteran and retired career transportation professional, Dick was born March 11, 1953 and was a 1971 graduate of Sweetwater High School. Dick is survived by his daughter Amanda, her husband Paul and their children, Rylie and Brody of Charleston, S.C. Dick’s four surviving brothers, family and friends are celebrating his life this July 2, 2011 at 10 a.m. at McCurdy Funeral Home in Lockhart, Texas.

Johnna Puckett Reynolds

Johnna Puckett Reynolds of Driftwood died tragically from injuries sustained in an automobile accident on June 21, 2011. Johnna had been a teacher in Texas for 21 years.

Sarona “Tootsie” Roberds

Sarona “Tootsie” Roberds, age 83 of Dallas, TX, passed away June 21, 2011. She was born May 5, 1928, in Waxahachie, TX, to G.W. Jr. and Jewel (Hazard) Whitaker. Tootsie grew up in Sweetwater, TX, where her family owned the local bakery. She spent her summers in Red Oak, TX, with her cousins, aunts and uncles.  Tootsie graduated from SMU in 1948 and was employed with the Dallas ISD. She enjoyed traveling, reading and visiting beautiful gardens. Tootsie was a member of Casa View Baptist Church.

V’ball summer league is set to begin June 28

The 2011 Sweetwater Volleyball Summer League will be held Tuesday nights this summer and will begin Tuesday, June 28. It will be held mainly at the Sweetwater High School new and old gyms. League age groups will be for the 2011-12 school year and are as follows: grades 7-8, ninth/JV and varsity. Also, a tournament will be held Tuesday, July 19 at the same locations. This is an opportunity for all volleyball players to get some additional volleyball experience. The entry fee will be $25 per player, and all checks should be made out to Sweetwater Summer Volleyball.

Over 70,000 acres now burned

Currently, the Texas Forest Service is assisting local crews put out a handful of fires: two of the more noticeable are in Nolan County near Maryneal and Taylor County near Trent.
