Fire burns 500 acres

Several fire departments are currently responding to the M&M Ranch fire near Maryneal. According to Sweetwater fire Chief Grant Madden, a total of 500 acres have already burned as firefighters continue to battle the blaze. The cause of the fire is of a "suspicious" nature, according to Madden.

Singer Songwriter Showcase slated for Aug. 27

STTAR (Sweetwater Texas Theatre Acquisition and Renovation) and the Sweetwater Municipal Auditorium board announce an exciting live music performance to be held in the Municipal Auditorium on Saturday evening, Aug. 27. The event, The West Texas Singer-Songwriter Showcase will feature Texas musicians, singers and songwriters, from locally to nationally known, including Lance Richburg of Sweetwater, Tony Barker of Abilene, Brian McRae of Austin, Lesley Sawyer, Andy Wilkinson and Kenny Maines, all of Lubbock and Bob Livingston of Austin.

Sweetwater Enterprise for Economic Development Executive Director Ken Becker and Executive Assistant Kirstin Smith joined economic and community development representatives from throughout the region at the Texas State Technical College campus on Wednesday, Aug. 10 to hear presentations related to enhancing local economic development initiatives.

Nolan County receives rain

Nolan County has recently seen some much needed rain in the area.
From Aug. 12-14, Oak Creek received 0.36 inches of rain, Lake Trammell received no rain and Lake Sweetwater received 0.15 inches of rain. For 2011, Oak Creek has received 3.13 inches of rain, while Lake Trammell has only received 1.00 inch of rain and Lake Sweetwater has received 1.99 inches of rain.
The filter plant received 0.47 inches of rain last week with its total for the year at 3.47 inches of rain.
Booster B has received 2.01 inches of rain for the year, with 0.50 of those inches last week.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 137 calls for service, issued 29 citations and made nine arrests from Aug. 12-14, 2011.

The SPD received 53, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Theft — 1400 block of James.
• Family violence assault — 400 block of Fisher.
• Duty upon striking — 400 block of E. Alabama.
• Unattended death — 600 block of E. Avenue C.
• Assault — 700 block of E. Arkansas.

Arrested by SPD
• James Gray, 40 — Reckless driving and driving while license invalid.
• Antonio Flores, 38 — Public intoxication.
• Lauren Pardue, 19 — Warrant.
