Construction continues on new apartment complex

In 2009, a company explored the opportunity to build a set of apartments in Sweetwater. They were looking to be able to get federal tax credits to build an 80 unit complex. The projections are to have 24 three bedroom, 32 two bedroom and 24 one bedroom apartments. The complex is being constructed on Interstate 20 near the Arizona Street exit. "The patience of the company paid off as construction started in the spring of 2011 and we are excited to see the completion of the construction which is expected somewhere around July of 2012, but no specific completion date has been set," said Executive

Hospital board sets tax rate

The Nolan County Hospital District Board of Directors met for a regular meeting on Monday evening, Aug. 29, 2011 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital (RPMH).
The 2012 budget for the hospital was approved, following no changes from the Budget Workshop previously held on Monday, Aug. 22. The proposed tax rate was set at .25237, which was the same as last year.

The SPD received 16, 911 calls.

Sammy Baugh Classic begins

The seventh annual Sam-my Baugh Classic makes its return to Mustang Bowl on Thursday, with three games on tap this year.
Sweetwater and Roscoe are playing in the Classic for the seventh straight year but are facing different opponents than in 2010, and two new teams — Rotan and Ranger — will be squaring off the final day.
Roscoe (0-1) will be seeking its first win when it plays Hawley (1-0) in Thursday’s opener at 7:30 p.m., while Sweetwater (1-0) — which is coming off a 10-0 season-opening win over Vernon at the Bowl — will be taking on No. 9-ranked Monahans (1-0) Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Police answer tough questions in Dunn case

In a weekend gathering to remember Dunn, supporters like Carrie McGonigle had tough words for local law enforcement.
"They can't get it together," said McGonigle. "They can't put their man egos aside and make it about a little girl."
Police chief Roy Owens insists that's exactly what their work is about. He said, "That is our number one goal- is to find Hailey."
Searchers like Holly Jenkins still gather to look for the missing teenager. She's angry, because she feels law enforcement is allowing her and others to waste their time.

Modern day treasure hunters are coming to Sweetwater

What treasures are stashed around Sweetwater? We are about to find out. The Treasure Hunters Roadshow is on a world-wide treasure hunt and will be digging in town for five days. During this free event, the Treasure Hunters are expecting to see over 1,200 residents bringing in their rare and unusual collectibles! Locals will have a chance to talk to world-renowned antique and collectible experts, and it’s all free!

Rain report released

A rain report was released for the latest rainfall receives by Nolan County on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011.
According to the report, Lake Trammell received no rain while Oak Creek receives 0.20 inches of rain and Lake Sweetwater received 0.15 inches of rain. The filter plant received 0.44 inches of rain. Booster B, the wastewater plant, well field p.s. and CR 151 received no rain.
