Have you ever wondered what it would be like to have an older brother? Or what it would be like to "adopt" someone? Well, now you can! Mustang Moms are initiating a fun new program called "Adopt-A-Mustang." Boys and girls, school age kindergarten through sixth grade, have the chance to adopt a varsity football player on Thursday, Aug. 18, 2011 after Meet the Mustangs, which starts at 8 p.m. Registration will be held immediately after Meet the Mustangs at the bowl and costs $25.
Based on recent water use trends combined with higher than normal water use projections, it is the recommendation of the City of Sweetwater's consulting engineers Enprotec/Hibbs & Todd, that the city enter into Stage 1 Drought Condition as described in the city's Drought Contingency Plan.
The city uses five stages of drought response in its Drought Contingency Plan with Stage 1 being least severe and least restrictive to system users.
As the Nolan Volunteer Fire Department (NVFD) prepares for its annual, sole brisket fundraiser coming up on Saturday, Aug. 13, 2011 at the Nolan-Divide Community Center starting at 5 p.m. the group of individuals we met couldnâ€™t help but recollect what brought them to this point from its beginnings, the stark reality of the recent White Hat fire and the dire need of funds they hope to replenish as a result of the upcoming fundraiser.
After four hours of deliberation, Albert Mendez, Jr. was found guilty of indecency with a child by contact and was sentenced to 18 years of prison with a $10,000 fine on Friday, Aug. 5, 2011 in the 32nd Judicial District Court by a Grand Jury.
The morning began at 9 a.m. with presiding Judge Glen Harrison giving the complete charge to the 10-man, 2-woman jury. The indictments read were for three counts against Mendezâ€”aggravated sexual assault, indecency with a child by contact and indecency with a child by exposure, following a Jan. 17, 2010 allegation of crime on his step-daughter.

Day three of the Albert Mendez, Jr. trial continued on Thursday, Aug. 4, 2011, in the 32nd Judicial District Court on the counts of sexual assault of a child, indecency of a child by contact and indecency of a child by exposure against Mendez following an incident with his step daughter on Jan. 17, 2010 at his residence in Sweetwater.
The day was full of testimonies â€” including Mendez taking the stand himself during the afternoon block of the trial.
The 2011 Sweetwater Heart Walk will take place on Saturday, Oct. 8, 2011, at the Sweetwater Mustang track field. Registration will begin at 9:30 a.m. An informational breakfast was held this week with speakers telling about the local heart walk and heart disease. One speaker was Scott Lambert (right). His son, Zane (left) was born with a heart problem. At nine days old he had open heart surgery to fix a pinched aorta. Lambert stated that he was never limited by the operation and is currently a student at Sul Ross State University in Alpine.
Highland Heights United Methodist Church recently consecrated and delivered a collection of 55 used suitcases, toilet tissue, Kleenex, paper towels, paper cups, laundry detergent, dishwasher detergent, soap and toothbrushes to Gateway Family Services. Gateway ministers to individuals involved in family violence and sexual assault in a five county area, Scurry, Nolan, Mitchell, Fisher and Kent. Pictured above is only a section of the altar that was filled with suitcases and supplies.
A graveside service for Darlene Jones, 61, of Sweetwater, will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 6, 2011, at Sweetwater Cemetery with Rev. Jimmy Don Bennett. Interment will follow under the direction of McCoy Funeral Home.
Jones died Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2011, in Abilene.
The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 59 calls for service, issued two citations and made two arrests on Aug. 3, 2011.
