Every 10 years, Texas requires that marks and brands be re-registered in the county or counties in which you operate.Â
The next re-registration period begins Aug. 31, 2011, and concludes Feb. 29, 2012. After the conclusion date, all marks and brands that have not been re-registered are automatically available for registration by another party.Â
The cost of registering brands in Nolan County is $16 per location. Payment may be made by cash, check or credit/debit card.
State Representative Susan L. King will be the host for the September 2011 Sweetwater Chamber of Commerce Coffee to be held on Thursday, Sept. 8, 2011, at the Sweetwater County Club. The coffee event is usually held the first Wednesday of the month, but has been changed for this event.
Texas AgriLife Extension Service’s annual Silver Clover Recognition Banquet celebrated its 44th year on Aug. 11 at the Zentners Daughter Steak House in San Angelo.
This year’s event recognized 28 individuals who are instrumental to the success of AgriLife Extension’s West Central District 4-H youth program, said Kathy Aycock, AgriLife Extension agent in Tom Green County and the banquet’s coordinator.
“Top volunteers are the backbone of all successful 4-H programs,” said Aycock. “They put in countless hours of work helping 4-H members become successful.
Phyllis Fern Walker, age 75, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Friday, July 22, 2011 at Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital in Sweetwater. Â
Her body was cremated and a memorial service will be held in Boscobel, WI at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 23, 2011, at the Kendall Funeral Home in Boscobel. Pastor Charles Miller will officiate. Interment will be in the Boscobel Cemetery. Local arrangements were made by Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home.Â
Friends may call on Tuesday, Aug. 23 from 9 a.m. until the time of service at 11 a.m. at Kendall Funeral Home.
Texas AgriLife Extension Service’s Big Country Beef Conference has been set for Aug. 25. The biennial conference starts with registration at 8 a.m. in the Display Building next to the Extension offices at the Taylor County Expo Center grounds. This year’s event will cover everything from the current status of the industry and 2012 Farm Bill to maintaining herd performance with limited forage resources.
The conference is the largest and most comprehensive educational beef program in the Big Country. We typically draw speakers and participants from across Texas.
The average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline in Texas is $3.48, five cents less than the average last week, according to the AAA Texas Weekend Gas Watch.
The national average is $3.58. The statewide average price is ten cents less than the national average. The most expensive gasoline averages in the state are in Austin, Galveston, and San Antonio at $3.48. Beaumont, Dallas, Ft. Worth, and Texarkana are reporting the least expensive averages in the state at $3.45 for a gallon of regular unleaded. The current cost of gasoline in Sweetwater is $3.59.

Sweetwater showed noticeable improvement in last week’s opening scrimmage at Lubbock Cooper when compared to the previous year’s result, battling the Pirates to a 1-1 standoff, but the team’s No. 1 offense was unable to score points.
Coach Craig Slaughter is hoping for a breakthrough in that area when the Mus-tangs host San Angelo Lake View tonight in their final scrimmage. The JV White and Red squads both scrimmage at 6 p.m., followed by the varsity at 7:30 p.m.
Texas Senator Robert Duncan met with local community leaders on Thursday morning, Aug. 18, 2011 for a Roundtable Discussion hosted by the Sweetwater campus of TSTC (Texas State Technical College) West Texas. The meeting took place at the campus in the President's Board Room in the Sears Building.
The Senator not only offered some oversight into the 82nd Legislative Session but also allowed for the audience to discuss important matters that impact the community.
The City of Sweetwater and Nolan County have combined forces to keep the Pioneer Museum looking its best. The two entities have agreed to work together to work on upkeep for the County-City Museum. Shown is city employee Jamie Allred keeping the sidewalk clean. City employees Randy Teel, Ramiro Betancourt and Angel Garcia helped clear brush from the Museum's front lawn. Also working that day was Casey Wooten.
The West Texas VA Health Care System is hosting a welcome home event to honor veterans who have served in Operation Enduring Freedom, Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation New Dawn (OEF/OIF/OND) beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27, at the historic Fort Concho in San Angelo.
