Tenaska donates to robotics program

Tenaska recently gave a $2,500 donation to the BEST robotics program. The program kicked off at Texas State Technical College on Saturday. Participants were introduced to the game where rules were reviewed and a demonstration was provided before entry kits were distributed to each school. Area schools involved include Sweetwater, Roscoe and Highland.

Darrell Campbell continues to improve after shooting

The Snyder police officer and former Sweetwater police officer recovering from a gunshot wound to the head is making steady progress.
Corporal Darryl Campbell is still in a Lubbock rehab center. Friends and family say his recovery has been miraculous. Snyder Police Chief Terry Luecke says members of the police force visit him often and it lifts everyone's spirits to see him doing better.
Campbell was able to make an appearance at an August concert held in his honor. He has been slowly regaining speech and motor skills.

RPMH offers free cholesterol screening

September is National Cholesterol Education Month and to acknowledge this occasion Rolling Plains Memorial Hospital Lab will be at the Sweetwater-Nolan County Health Department (SNCHD), located at 301 E. 12th, on Thursday, Sept. 15 from 8:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to offer free cholesterol screening.

The Sweetwater Police Department (SPD) received 150 calls for service, issued 23 citations and made nine arrests from Sept. 9-11, 2011.

The SPD received 26, 911 calls.

Calls for service:
• Burglary of a building — 400 block of E. New Mexico.
• Theft — 600 block of Jack Lambert.
• Family violence assault/failure to report felony — 500 block of Newman.

• Male juvenile, 13 — Assault, class A.
• Ashley Lopez, 25 — Warrant.

Daniel G. Martinez, Sr.

Daniel G. Martinez, Sr., age 74, of Sweetwater, Texas, passed away on Sunday, Sept. 11, 2011 at Hendrick Medical Center. 
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 14, 2011, at Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home Chapel with Johnny Deleon officiating. Burial will follow at Sweetwater Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Cate-Spencer & Trent Funeral Home. 
Daniel was born on May 21, 1937 in Eskota, Texas to Pascual and Felipa (Gomez) Martinez. He worked as a cement pipe manufacturer for Gifford-Hill-American before retiring. 

Football player of the week

Ryan Linebaugh has been named as Sweetwater’s Football Player of the Week. Linebaugh, a 5-9, 165-pound junior who starts at running back and linebacker, was the Mustangs’ leading rusher and tackler this past week against Levelland in a 27-8 victory. On defense he had nine solo tackles, three for a loss, plus six assisted tackles, one sack, one quarterback knockdown, one big hit and one defensed pass. On offense, Linebaugh rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns, including a 34-yard clinching TD with 6:43 remaining.

Highland (1-2) won its first game of the season this past Friday by defeating Novice, 70-52.

7th grade Red is lone winner

The Sweetwater Middle School seventh grade Red team was the only winner in season-opening football action this past Thursday as it defeated Levelland 36-0.
Jacoby Hunt ran for five touchdowns in the victory. His TD runs went for 14, 48, 28, 4 and 70 yards. In addition, Hunt had a 63-yard run to Levelland’s 14-yard line to set up his first TD. Jordan McGee had a pair of two-point conversion runs and Daniel Olguin one.
